Khumbu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Khumbu is one of three subregions of the main Sherpa settlement of the Himalaya, the other two being Solu and Pharak.
Khumbu is located in northeastern Nepal and includes the town of Namche Bazaar as well as the villages of Thami, Khumjung, Pangboche and Kunde.
Due to its location in the Himalaya, the Khumbu's elevation ranges from 3,400 metres (11,000') all the way to the highest point on Earth, Mount Everest at 8,850m (29,035').

Sherpas of Khumbu   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Most of Khumbu consists of high-altitude rock, ice, and snow, and less than a fifth of 1 percent of it can be farmed, but other land is suitable for pasture, water is plentiful, and wood is- or at least would have been 450 years ago-plentiful.
In Khumbu these Sherpa newcomers eventually established a routine of transhumance-farming the fields around their sturdy permanent houses and seasonally following their herds-to less substantial shelters in higher pastures in summer and to lower ones in winter.
The Khumbu sherpas acquired a monopoly on this trade when the government of Nepal under the Rana regime prohibited the lowland sherpas from trading further north than Namche Bazaar and Tibetan traders from trading further south.
