The Khuriya Muriya Islands or Kuria Muria Islands (Arabic: Jazāʾir Khurīyā Murīyā or Khūryān Mūryān; Location: 17°30′ N 56°00′ E) are an offshore territory of Oman consisting of five islands with a total area of 73 km².
The islands (from west to east) are Al-Hasikiyah, As-Sawda', Al-Hallaniyah, Qarzawit, and Al-Qibliyah.
The islands are 40 km off the southeastern coast of Oman in the Khuriya Muriya Bay of the Arabian Sea.

Midway along this coast and about fifteen kilometers offshore is the barren island of Masirah.
Stretching about seventy kilometers, the island occupies a strategic location near the entry point to the Gulf of Oman from the Arabian Sea.
Because of its location, it became the site of military facilities used first by the British and then by the United States, following an access agreement signed in 1980 by the United States and Oman.

The US has diplomatic relations with 149 of the 159 UN members--the exceptions are Albania, Angola, Byelorussia (constituent republic of the Soviet Union), Cambodia, Cuba, Iran, Vietnam, People's Democratic Republic of Yemen {Yemen (Aden) or South Yemen}, Ukraine (constituent republic of the Soviet Union) and, obviously, the US itself.
In addition, the US has diplomatic relations with 13 nations that are not in the UN--Andorra, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Liechtenstein, Marshall Islands, Monaco, Nauru, San Marino, South Korea, Switzerland, Tonga, Tuvalu, and the Vatican City.
North Korea is not in the UN and the US does not have diplomatic relations with that nation.

It first became apparent that the Qawasim had other interests besides trade when the Qasimi shaykh of Ras al Khaymah assisted the imam of Oman,Sultan bin Saif II, in seizing Bahrain in 1720.
Because the East India Company's headquarters were at Bandar Abbas on the mainland behind Qeshm, the British were outraged at the loss of revenue caused by ships berthing at the closer port of Basidu.
The British by that time were so closely involved in Omani affairs that the British viceroy in India, Lord Canning, adjudicated between the sultan's quarreling sons after the sultan's death in 1856.
