Kiai - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In bujitsu (or the Japanese art of war), it is usually linked to the inner amassing of energy released in a single explosive focus of will, shout, or in one legend a "stare" in which a samurai froze a pack of wolves in their tracks by simply glaring at them.
It is frequently associated with the representation of Asian martial arts in cinema and in animated cartoons.
The kiai is the main component of the Japanese art of Kiaijutsu, which basically means "the art of shouting".

Re: kiai in kata   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Kiai to me is the vocal expression of the power and spirit within each of us.
But when I think of a kiai now, I like to include the aspect of expressing the spirit, pretty much like saying in your most forceful way, that you are serious about what you are doing, and that you will not give in, nor give up.
The kiai is to me a war cry, given in battle when there is no retreat, and no surrender.

The Kiai: The vibrant breath of the art - Part II I have found that most people who kiai do so more for the vocal decoration or distraction than the fierceness that is within the realm of the true kiai.
Over the last forty-one years of training, attending inter-school challenges, and more specifically, participating in tournaments, the kiai has in some cases become just vocal decoration, and in that one sets his/her parameters where there should be none.

In the past the art of kiai, or kiai jutsu, was a highly esoteric and secret discipline often taught to professional warriors, or senior students of martial arts.
In karate a kiai often accompanies the practice of basic techniques, and is used in self-defense and freefighting.
In aikido, aikijujutsu and jujutsu the kiai is used to startle the attacker, especially if the attack is a grab, so as to momentarily distract the attacker from his original intent and allow the defender more easily to start a defensive technique.

A desire among NU students (santri), kiai, and the faithful generally to return the movement to its original socially engaged and reformist character gave birth in 1984 to a move abandoning NU's role as political party and re-embracing NU's original 1926 charter (khittah).

Andre Engels: From the places where I have read discussion of kiai, it seems to be about 'not letting your opponent have their way'.
This is especially important with kikashi as HolIgor mentions - very good kiai is to take the opponent's kikashi, answer in an unexpected way, and either get sente or turn it into a thank you move.
It applies to other situations also, however, for example if the opponent tries to make an exchange that secures territory on both sides, it is kiai to break through and counterattack.
