Topic: Kia Spectra

  2002 Kia Spectra
Last year, the Kia Spectra was a hatchback version of the Kia Sephia, a 4-door compact sedan significant for being Kia's first model sold in the U.S. under its own nameplate, dating back to 1993.
Kia sweetens the deal with a warranty program that extends basic coverage to five years or 60,000 miles, and powertrain coverage to 10 years or 100,000 miles; it also includes five-year/100,000-mile rust perforation protection, and a five-year/unlimited mileage roadside assistance plan.
Kia Spectra lineup consists of two body styles: a conventional four-door sedan and a hatchback with four passenger doors and a quasi-fastback roofline.

Whereas the old Spectra's shift quality was so bad as to actually be objectionable, the new shifter is just "not that great." It no longer feels vague or flexy in operation--it's actually very easy to use now--it's just not a very satisfying device to row through the gears.
The new Spectra's interior was the single most improved aspect of the 2004.5 model, and when directly compared with its predecessor (as I got a chance to do on the dealer lot), the results are nothing short of incredible.
Although the new Spectra is still playing catch-up with the class leaders (and, in some aspects like transmission feel, even the class also-rans), it's taken immense steps forward to narrow the gap between itself and the big-name players.

 Carpages.ca - 2005 Kia Spectra Road Test
Kia Canada just introduced the new 2005 Spectra to Canadian media in Santa Monica, California last Friday, March 26, with most seeming a little surprised by how good it really is. I, for one, am impressed.
Kia's Canadian division actually hired an ex-Toyota engineer to check tolerances at the Korean plant, according to Bill Porter, president and CEO of Kia Canada, and only accept cars that met this high standard.
Kia had one on hand at the press event, albeit this car was destined for the upcoming SEMA show in Las Vegas and was therefore tuned to 220+ horsepower via a supercharger and featured a stylish aero body kit painted in bright yellow - not an available paint scheme.

Kia, which has been maligned as a cut-rate car shop in the past, is out to change that perception, and the new 2004 Kia Spectra represents a solid step in the right direction.
Thankfully, the 2004 Kia Spectra is spacious, and total interior volume has increased to 97 cubic feet, which equates to best-in-class room for legs, elbows and heads.
Kia was going to a ride and handling mix somewhere between the stiff Mazda Protégé and the soft Ford Focus, while retaining both of those models’ ability to provide a decent amount of feedback about road surface and mechanicals to the driver.

Kia was very careful when it came here in '92 and had an administration, distribution and parts supply system in place before the first vehicle to carry its logo hit the streets.
The Spectra is not only visually very different from the Sephia, but the GSX model like the one we had has as standard equipment almost all the bells-and-whistles that are optional on its more plebeian stablemate.
Kia offers a lot for the consumer's buck in all of its five models that are offered here and it does very well in the 120 other countries where it has dealers.

Although the Spectra stays acceptably on course on straight highways and through modest curves, it sometimes threatens to become a little unhinged in quick maneuvers.

Kia designers took the extra space and used a light, subtle touch - the result of which is a car that does, indeed, look slightly more expensive than its economy price tag.

The Spectra is a clean-sheet re-design that doesn't share any components with its previous incarnation (though it does share a platform with the Hyundai Elantra); and it's easy to imagine that the first things put down on that clean sheet were specs for the class-leading Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic.
Unlike Kia and Toyota, Honda reserves its variable valve technology for its top-of-the-line EX model that makes 127 hp and 114 lbs.-ft. of torque, but to get the extra horses customers have to spring for pricey features like a power moonroof, and even then they get less power than the base Spectra.
On the interior, the Spectra is noticeably bigger with a class-leading passenger volume of 97.0 f[t.sup.3]vs. 91.4 f[t.sup.3] for the Civic and 90.3 f[t.sup.3] for the Corolla.
