The Ifugao inhabit the most rugged and mountainous part of the country, high in the Central Cordillera in northern Luzon, with peaks rising from 1,000-1,500 m., and drained by the waters of the Magat River, a tributary of Cagayan River.
Ifugao religious beliefs are expressed in the numerous rites and prayers (baki) that comprise the main body of Ifugao myths.
Ifugao epics are chanted romances recounting the origins of the people, the life and adventure of the Ifugao heroes, the valor of men and the beauty of women, as well as ancient customs and traditions.

When Ifugao was separated from Nueva Vizcaya in 1905, Captain Jeff Gallman of the American Army was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Ifugao and was Succeeded by J. Jamilinsen.
It was in Ifugao, particularly Mt. Napulawan in the municipality of Hungduan, where General Yamashita known as "The Tiger of Malaya" decided to put his last stand against the Filipino and American forces.
Ifugao then started its operation as a distinct province on April 1, 1967 a few days after the first provincial officials were inducted into office on March 26, 1967 by His Excellency, Ferdinand E. Marcos, at La Trinidad, Benguet.

Kiangan was celebrated in Spanish times, and even more recently, as the home of some of the most desperate head-hunters of the Archipelago.
But the Ifugaos, thanks to Gallman, as already said, have abandoned head-hunting, and the skulls in hand, if kept at all, are now hidden inside their owner's houses, their places being taken by carabao heads and horns.

KIANGAN, Ifugao -- The latest population survey of Ifugao showed that about 50 percent of its residents have abandoned the centuries-old rice terraces for lowland farms, reducing the skills required to restore these World Heritage sites.
Baguilat is nursing back to health the terraces of Barangay Julongan in his hometown Kiangan, as a test case for the rest of the Cordillera terraces, which the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) had inscribed in the World Heritage list.
This is the ninth ritual of a 12-rite cycle of the province's rice planting and harvest rituals.

KIANGAN, Ifugao - As night falls in this town, a group of mumbakis, or high priests, gathers to perform a sacred rite called "holiat" aimed to ensure the success of the "Gotad Ad Kiyangan," an annual cultural festival.
Mayor Albert Indunan of Kiangan said he was happy with the number of mumbakis who gathered to perform the holiat, and that the number was an indication that the high priests appreciate the objectives of the festival.
As such, Kiangan villagers should be at the forefront of the "uphill battle" to preserve Ifugao culture.

KIANGAN, IFUGAO - To increase the yield of Ifugao rice farmers and help preserve the province’s rice terraces, the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM) introduced the system of rice intensification (SRI) to upland rice farmers.
Ciencia also related that the PRRM had tied up with the Save Ifugao Terraces Movement (SITMO), an organization working for the preservation of Ifugao’s terraces, by introducing more productive farming practice to entice local farmers not to leave their farms.
James Tayaban, chair of SITMO board, said that younger generations of Igorots are abandoning their farms to look for jobs in the nearby urban centers.

Ifugao Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Jose Guyguyon said that the dam will submerge the sitios of Cabaduyan, Bukig, Dole, and Napu including the Amoweg Elementary School.
Barangay Amoweg, which is populated entirely by members of the Kalanguya and the Ayangan tribes in Ifugao, is the current subject of a territorial dispute between the two neighboring provinces.

After his formal surrender in Kiangan, Yamashita was brought to the Camp John Hay in Baguio City on Sept. 3, for the signing of the instrument of surrender.
