Kibbo Kift - Education - Information - Educational Resources - Encyclopedia - Music
The Kindred of the Kibbo Kift was founded in 1920 by the charismatic John Hargrave (White Fox), artist, author and Boy Scout Commissioner for Woodcraft and Camping, who had become disenchanted with the increasingly militaristic tendency in the Scout movement after WWI.
Based on the woodcraft principles of the naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton that had been a key part of the early Scout programme, the Kibbo Kift was to be not merely a youth organisation but was to involve all ages and, very daring for the times, it was open to both sexes.
The Kibbo Kift's central activities of hiking and camping were refined and elevated to the level of a spiritual exercise.

A History of the Kibbo Kift
On August 18, 1920, a group of young men met in a London hall to formalise the foundation of a new movement to be known as the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift.
As can be seen from a reading of THE CONFESSION the purpose of the Kibbo Kift Kindred was to train a body of men and women who, having drawn apart from the mass, would fit themselves to act as a catalyst on a corrupt and directionless society and lead it back to health and wealth.
The Kibbo Kift "habit" was replaced by a simplified uniform (the "Green Shirt"), and a disciplined paramilitary technique with marching, drums and banners cut through the barrier of suppression and brought the message direct to the people.

 Earthcrafters
Kibbo kift, a phrase in old Kentish dialect meaning "Proof of Great Strength," provided a name, and Seton's Woodcraft formed a framework on which the gifted and charismatic Hargrave constructed his own system.
In 1924, in turn, Hargrave faced a schism of his own when Leslie Paul, a Kibbo Kift member, organized a breakaway group - the Woodcraft Folk - that quickly established connections with the Labour Party and progressive social movements generally.
The Kibbo Kift converted itself into a political movement during the Depression, espousing social and economic reform, and then went out of existence in 1950; a successor organization, the Kibbo Kift Foundation, still exists and preserves many Kindred artifacts and records.

Hargrave recognised that the unemployed masses and the activists in the labour movement could swell the ranks of the K.K.K., and eventually be organised on a national scale to implement his dream of social regeneration.

A challenge to his resolutely apolitical leadership of Kibbo Kift in 1926 led to the creation of the Woodcraft Folk – which endures to this day – while Hargrave himself pursued a new enthusiasm for Major C H Douglas, and his controversial social credit theories.
The disappointing outcome of the government enquiry, however, absurdly but perhaps characteristically gave way to delight at the news that his work with the Kibbo Kift, so many years ago, was to be celebrated in a well-received rock musical at the Edinburgh festival in 1976.
Intriguingly, his papers and an extensive collection of Kibbo Kift memorabilia and regalia are now housed in the Youth Movement Archive at University College and at the LSE.

A small band dressed in the ceremonial garb of the Kibbo Kift paraded through Coniston village singing about Robin Hood and ended up in the 16th-century Old Hall, where an incongruous Power Point lecture on the history of the radical movement was given by Harry White.
The Kibbo Kift were a group of idealists who believed in the educational value of outdoor pursuits, arts and crafts and ‘recapitulation theory’ (which requires that an individual return to primitivism before progressing to a truly civilized state).
Rather like Madame Blavatsky’s Theosophy, the movement sprang from a magpie’s mash of references and influences, including Fabian socialism, pacifism, neo-Hellenism, co-education, the writings of H.G. Wells, social credit and the open-air movement, and was a workable rejuvenating scheme with thousands of members during the 1920s and ’30s.
