Kayishema, 44, is a former Prefect (Governor) of Kibuye region in Rwanda and a medical doctor.
Ruzindana, 39, a native of Kibuye and a relatively wealthy former businessman based in Kigali, is charged with six counts of genocide, crimes against humanity (murder, extermination and other inhumane acts) and violations of the article 3 common to the Geneva Conventions and its Additional Protocol II.
Ruzindana is alleged to have ordered several massacres in Kibuye and to have directly shot and hacked to death several victims himself, using various tricks to flush out from hiding those who had survived previous attacks.

An initial assessment of human remains and graves on the properties of the Kibuye Roman Catholic Church and Home St. Jean Complex was conducted by Physicians for Human Rights expert William D. Haglund, Ph.D., from September 20 through 22, 1995.
This total is the sum of the minimum number of 454 individuals removed from the Grave KB-G1 and the minimum of 39 individual skeletal remains recovered from the surface of the north and south slopes between the Church and Lake Kivu.
Of the total of 493 individuals examined from the properties of Kibuye Roman Catholic Church and Home St. Jean properties, 211 (43%) were females, 147 (30%) males, and 135 (27%) were of undetermined sex.
