How to Record a Kick Drum
The fact is that the sound of the kick is often critical to the success of a mix, particularly in rock, dance, and other types of music for which the bass drum plays a foundational role.
The double-headed kick drum with a hole or port in the resonant head is popular among drummers in many styles because of its versatility.
Generally, single-headed kick drums are at their best when muffled, typically with a blanket or large pillow resting snugly against the lower portion of the batter head.

  Kick Drum Tuning
By acoustic impact I mean that the removal of head material does affect the bass portion of the note coming from the drum.
A Typical tuning method is to have the batter head control the attack portion of the sound and the resonant head to control the “sustain” portion of the sound.
A fat kick drum is achieved the same way a “fat” tom sound is achieved.

As for any drum, while you have the heads removed, give the bearing edges a wipe with a soft cloth, and the inside of the hoops, the inside of the drum, and even the lugs.
If you lay the drum on one end and hit the head lightly with a stick, you will notice that just by laying some light cloth over 1/4 of the kick drum head that all ringing after the initial punch is gone.
What causes the most wear and tear on a kick head is the impact of the beater, and the heat generated from the friction between the head and the beater.

How to create fat kick drum samples | Bass drum
Once a nice, basic kick is achieved, treating it with two of the mastering engineer's favorite tools is often the next step.
That is perfect if, for example, you want to push the sub of your kick without emphasizing the higher frequencies (which often affect the tone of the attack), or vice-versa.
That is one of the keys to achieving great mixes, both in the case of kick drums and in general: You want to avoid too many overlapping frequencies.

Bass drum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are three general classifications of bass drums: the concert bass drum, the 'kick' drum, and the pitched bass drum.
In a drum kit, the bass drum is much smaller, most commonly 20" or 22" but sizes from 16" to 24" are quite normal, with depths of 14" to 18", although some brands have made 20" sizes.
Double bass drum techniques were first used by artists such as Ray McKinley as far back as the 1940s, and then further pioneered by artists such as Louie Bellson in the 1950s and popularised in the 1960s by Ginger Baker of Cream and Keith Moon of the Who.

Kick drum(s) - Usually in the center of the kit.
On some drum machines (and samplers), different velocities trigger a different drum sound as well as a different drum volume, just as a drum sounds different when hit at different levels of force.
In sequencing drums, you can achieve this effect by sliding all the snare drum hits forward a few ticks (also known as pulses-per-quarter-note, or timing resolution, ticks are divisions of a quarter note; most sequences use a resolution of 120 ticks per quarter note).

Drum Recording: A Weak Kick Drum Can Nearly Ruin Your Snare Drum Tone
While the solution is simple (hit the kick drum harder!!) I think this situation sheds some light on understanding the relationships between the various microphones used in a typical drum recording session.
In fact, the snare drum, while very thin sounding (due to being picked up by the kick drum's microphone), is not that much lower in level than the kick drum.
Also, I was having trouble keeping the kick drum sounding natural through the gate because of the timing of the gate opening and closing.

Kick Drum Mics: Large diaphragm dynamic cardioid mic rated for high pressure and low frequencies such as the AKG D112, the Shure Beta52A, the Audix D6, the Sennheiser E602, etc.
Using two microphones on the kick drum, you will have so many options for carving your sound, and all you will have to do in post-production is balance between the two inputs.
Unlike the kick drum, where one microphone will suffice to musically illustrate what a kick drum sounds like, you have to use two microphones on the snare drum in order to correctly illustrate what a snare drum sounds like.

Music Connection: Recording Tips, Miking a kick drum
Take a large "sound absorb" blanket and drape it over the drum and the chair to create a "tunnel" (the large mic will be at the end of the tunnel).
The blanket steers away the potential mic bleed from the other drum voices, allowing the large mic to pick up the distant, "woof" of the kick.
The smaller mic in the kick will pick up the "click" and the distant mic will provide the "boom." You can sum them to taste to one channel or record both to separate tracks and blend them during the mixing process.

Drum Machines - Creating Killer Drum Grooves
And once rhythm composers leave the cozy confines of a straightforward beat (for example, kick on beats 1 and 3, snare on beats 2 and 4, 16th notes on the hi-hats), they're often in uncharted waters.
Moving the position of a kick drum downbeat from 000 to 002 or 003 often gives the groove a more natural give and take.
Drum 'n' bass artists, like the Prodigy or Chemical Brothers, gleefully storm along at speeds of 140 and 150 beats per minute, while TLC and R Kelly like to shimmy about at a groovy snail's pace of 60 or 70 beats per minute.
