Gavilan started as a professional boxer on the evening of June 5, 1943, when he beat Antonio Diaz by a decision in four rounds in Havana.
In 1953, Gavilan retained the title by a knockout in ten against Chuck Davey, by a decision in 15 against Carmen Basilio and by a decision in 15 against Bratton.
Gavilan died in Miami, Florida of a heart attack at age 77.

In 1954 Gavilan tried to win the middleweight title but was soundly beaten by Carl Olsen, Gavilan was now a shell of his former self.
Gavilan lost his earnings and possessions when Cuba was taken control of by Fidel Castro but was allowed to emigrate to the USA in 1968 and was part of Ali's entourage for a time.

I didn’t see all of "The Hawk’s" bouts when he first arrived stateside … before proving himself, he went the traveling route … the 1947 Kid Gavilan show played to out of town audiences like Baltimore, Newark and Philadelphia.
My USMC service 1949-52 kept me from seeing the Gavilan at the title doorstep … victims were Williams twice along with wins over middleweights Rocky Castellani, Laurent Dauthuille … he also got first title crack with decision loss to the sweetest sugar of all … Ray Robinson.
The Kid was truly special … and happily, he received his due on 1966, when numbered among those first elected to the Hall of Fame at Canastota, NY … and he got there the old-fashioned way … he earned it.
