The Vibert dis is a half-flippant, half-earnest gauntlet to the first-wave IDM luminary whose 1995 EPs as Plug pioneered what was later christened "drill'n'bass," a mini-genre based around the intensification-through-caricature of jungle's breakbeat-splicing technickery.
The other two-thirds of the Kid606 sound spectrum are even noisier: gabba's distorto-blare riffs and stampeding kicks, and the hums, crackles, and tics of "glitch" (all that post-Oval music made from damaged CDs, abused equipment, etc.).
Attitude-wise, Kid606 reminds me a bit of mid-'90s U.K. riot-grrrl banner carriers Huggy Bear—the same petulance and obstreperousness, the divided impulses between communicative urgency and hermetic encryption, the exaltation of youth (Depredo is the real deal, whereas Huggy sloganeered about being kid's-lib guerrillas but turned out to be the oldest teenagers in London town).

The problem with all of this, however, is that it is not really a mash-up album at all, and to call it as such greatly discredits Kid606.
It is not horrendous, nor is it a spoiler, but its lazy fuzz is certainly incongruous and disappointing given the caliber and energy put into the album's first 3/4, and may have been better served on Kid606's next Mille Plateaux release.
However to those who fully appreciate the Tigerbeat6 mission statement, however vague it may be, it should fully satisfy as a step in an exciting, and totally new direction.

Kid606 - The Illness Ep: Silent Uproar
Kid606, after tearing electro, noise, IDM, punk and hip-hop into tatters on his mindfuckingly brilliant 2000 album Down With the Scene, is back with a brand new batch of genre-bending songs that have been swirling inside the Kid’s laptop for some time.
Although Kid606’s latest full-length, Kill Sound Before Sound Kills You, is scheduled to be released in the coming months, he adds this five-song teaser to his wrath of EPs and singles to mount anticipation as much as it pleases your audio appetite.
The opening track is the highlight of the EP, but the nine-minute, epilepsy-triggering “Ecstasy Motherfucker” is a close second as the track twitches violently at 160 beats per minute with enough body-writhing venom to make any DJ drool.

His work irritates some, but even those who dislike him usually are willing to tip their hats to his, shall we say, Resilience.

On Resilience, Kid606 has flipped his usual theme of ideas per minute to minutes per idea.

From there Kid606 feels from to wander, from dark new wave in the tradition of Gary Numan ("Done With the Scene" and "Sugercoated") to bubbly reggae ("Phoenix Riddim" and "Hold it Together").
The textures are not novel and are not supposed to be, so a record like this is going to live or die on the basis of its tunes.

Various electronic musicians and friends of kid606 construct remixes of his earlier work, which are mixed in with the occasional "new" work of the kid himself.
The result is reminiscent of the "Supergroup" syndrome of rock's past, where celebrated musicians formed a faux-band, not out of a spirit of collectivism, but because they could make a quick killing on the charts.
The work on kid606 and friends vol.1 is as strong as kid606's prior work; there's no reason for it not to be, as long as he chooses talented remixers.

Miguel Depredo has always been a bit of a prankster when it comes to his music (see the excellent, illegal The Action Packed Mentallist Brings You The Fucking Jams), but even at his earliest and most fragmentary he’s also been deeply talented.
He does lots of neat things, and in the hands of a musician with less energy, humour and talent than Depredo, this album could easily be more fun to think about than to actually listen to.

Miguel Depedro (aka Kid606) has been on the vanguard of digital music since he was, well, a kid, chopping up techno, deglossing hip-hop's slick artifice and doing so serious a number on drill 'n' bass that Aphex Twin and Squarepusher ushered in the new millennium nervously looking over their shoulders.
Tigerbeat 6, the label that Kid606 has been running for the past four years, has yet to make its catalog available to digital retailers, however.
