  KIDAL
Visitors are infrequent, due to the region's desert climate, sparse population and threat of violence stemming from the Tuareg rebellion of the late '90s.
Several kinds of animals have made their home in Kidal's often harsh environment, from the striped hyena to gazelles to gerboise and ratels.
Kidal is also distinguished by its handicrafts, particularly swords, including Tuareg sabers and cutlasses with leather scabbards.
