Kidangoor is located in Kottayam District of Kerala and is on the Kottayam-Pala road.
The place is famous for Kidangoor Skanda Temple and the St Mary’s Forane Church.
Kidangoor can be approached from Ettumanoor (7 km) as well as from Pala (10 km).

THE KENDRA Sangeet Natak Akademi award conferred on 78-year-old Kidangoor Rama Chakyar is in recognition of his erudition and experience in Koodiyattom.
It is believed that the Kidangoor family of Chakyars, also known as Cheriya Parisha, migrated to this place, near Kottayam, from Nayathode in Ernakulam district, more than a thousand years ago.
They received the patronage of the local rulers and were assigned the right to perform in Kidangoor temple.

 Udayanapuram Subramanyar Temple
Interestingly, no food offerings are made at the Vaikom temple sanctum during this festival, as it is believed that Shiva himself fasts, for his son's success in the battle against the demons, while thousands are fed within the temple precincts.
The Kidangoor Skanda temple: At Kidangoor in this area, there is a Subramanya temple.
Legend has it that this temple was originally constructed for Vishnu, but a sequence of events involving local legends caused this to be consecrated as a Subramanya temple (in a manner similar to the Kumaranalloor temple).

Adoor Gopalakrishnan, leading filmmaker, made a 3-hour documentary on Koodiyattam for screening before the Unesco jury in Paris.
Avoiding the hustle and bustle of filmmaking, Adoor filmed the performances in the koothambalams in Kidangoor and Harippad.
Originally 7 hour long, the documentary was cut down to 3 hours.

The prominent among them included Singh Bandhu (Hindustani vocal), Bombay Sisters (Carnatic vocal), Saswati Sen (Kathak), Pasumarthy Seetharamiah (Kuchipudi), Rohini Hatangadi (theatre actress) Swadesh Deepak (Hindi playwright), Hans Raj Hans (Punjabi folk music), Kidangoor Rama Chakyar (Kudiyattam) and Kanhailal Maharana (Chhau).
Music critic S K Saxena has also been given the award for his overall contribution to performing arts.

 Saamavedam
As with other Vedams, Saamavedam originally had numerous branches, but only three exist now - Jaimineeyam, Raanaayaneeyam and Kauthhumam, of which Namboothiris follow the first.
There are only about twenty Saamavedi families spread over Panjal (Thrissur district), Mookkuthala (Malappuram district), and Kidangoor and Onamthuruthu (Kottayam district), but practised primarily in Panjal.
It has two parts - Poorvaarchikam and Utharaarchikam, and contains totally 1875 Manthrams.
