Dialysis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In acute renal failure, (renal) dialysis is generally initiated when the renal function has deteriorated to an extent that it is threatening the body's physiology.
Dialysis is conducted in a dedicated facility, either a special room in a hospital or clinic that specializes in hemodialysis.
The bag of dialysis fluid is removed from the protective packaging, and is hung from an IV stand or other elevated location, such as a coat hook.

Dr. Koop - Kidney Dialysis- Health Encyclopedia and Reference
Dialysis is a procedure that replaces some of the kidney's normal functions and is performed when a person's own kidneys can no longer function adequately to maintain life.
Dialysis may be necessary for a short period of time until the kidneys recover.
Chronic kidney failure does not get better and patients need dialysis treatments for the rest of their lives, or if they are medically eligible, they may choose to be placed on a waiting list to receive a kidney transplant.

Patients give nod to kidney dialysis at home
The Johns Hopkins researchers found that after about several weeks of treatment, kidney disease patients who were given the option of peritoneal dialysis were 1.5 times more likely than artificial kidney hemodialysis patients to rate their overall care as excellent.
Generally, peritoneal dialysis can be conducted in several short daily sessions at home or work using portable equipment, whereas hemodialysis requires multiple visits to a dialysis center each week for hours at a time.
While patients who use peritoneal dialysis must visit a dialysis center for about one to two weeks to be trained, eventually they can perform the 30 minute procedure four times a day outside of the center, offering them much more independence.

Dialysis is a life-saving option until a suitable organ donor is found, but it is not a cure for end-stage renal failure.
A patient with end-stage renal failure can be on dialysis for as long as it takes to get a kidney transplant or for the rest of his or her life.
Peritoneal dialysis is a different method of dialysis that uses the inner lining of your abdomen to filter your blood.

Dialysis is a treatment that performs the functions of natural kidneys when the they fail (kidney failure).
Most patients begin dialysis when their kidneys have lost 85% to 90% of their ability to function, and will continue dialysis for the rest of their lives; this is called end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
Dialysis may also be done to quickly remove toxins from the bloodstream, in cases of poisoning or drug overdose.

Kidney Dialysis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
It is the job of the kidneys to remove the harmful particles from the blood and to regulate the blood's ionic concentrations, while keeping the essential particles in the blood (Figure 1).
In the kidney, the blood undergoes filtration and dialysis to separate the particles that will be removed from the body (through the ureter to the bladder) from those that will be returned to the circulating blood (through the renal vein).
Thus, artificial kidney dialysis uses the same chemical principles that are used naturally in the kidneys to maintain the chemical composition of the blood.

Dialysis can be used in the treatment of patients suffering from poisoning or overdose, in order to quickly remove drugs from the bloodstream.
While the treatment prescription and regimen is usually overseen by a nephrologist (a doctor that specializes in the kidney), dialysis treatments are typically administered by a nurse or patient care technician in outpatient clinics known as dialysis centers, or in hospital-based dialysis units.
Although dialysis treatment is very effective in removing toxins and fluids from the body, there are several functions of the kidney it cannot mimic, such as regulating high blood pressure and red blood cell production.

People with diabetes are at risk for developing anemia because this specific type of kidney damage, known as diabetic nephropathy, can result in a slow but progressive loss of kidney function and a related decrease in red blood cell production.
As the kidneys deteriorate, their ability to produce adequate erythropoietin is impaired, resulting in decreased production of new red blood cells and anemia.

 kidney dialysis
The first practical demonstration of this process, known as continuous dialysis of blood was by John Abel 1 in 1914, using anaesthetised rabbits and dogs and dialysis membranes made from treated parchment.
In the meantime, improved dialysis membranes made from cellophane, and dialysis machines which required a smaller volume of blood, had been developed.
One major drawback of kidney dialysis machines is that the patient has to remain attached to them for many hours at a time, several times a week.

Before kidney dialysis came along you typically were told to save cigarette packs to buy somebody time on an iron lung--one of your classic sick bargains.
The company soon stopped dialysis drives due partly to complaints that it was "trading in human misery." But the idea evidently survived in the public mind, with one twist: the medium of exchange was somehow switched to pop can pull tabs.
The Reynolds and kidney foundation people have tried to get that point across with a poster showing a red "Ghostbusters"-type slash through a cartoon of someone trying to detach a pull tab from a can.
