Kids (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kids (1995) is a film centered on a day in the life for a group of New York City teenagers and their unrestrained behavior towards sex and drugs during the emergence of HIV.
Kids is often compared to similar films such as Thirteen and Kidulthood, which deal with most of the same issues.
The film was highly controversial upon its release, and was given an NC-17 rating by the MPAA.

 Kids . Tucson Weekly . 08-31-95
Kids' deceptively simple storyline follows the teenaged main characters Telly (Leo Fitzpatrick) and Casper (Justin Pierce) through a day of casual debauchery, beginning with Telly's systematic deflowering of a young woman he cares nothing for.
The film's purposeful gross-out moments are many, including a scene in which a boy casually sucks fruit punch out of a tampon.
The characters are depicted in varying shades of emptiness and sympathy, rather than the monochromatic gray that washes over Kids; and their conflicts serve to work out the film's themes, whereas the characters in Kids never clash, since they all represent the same nothingness.

Kids (1995)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Kids is an insightful, poignant and harrowing depiction of the life of angst ridden teens in New York City.
The film doesn't have much of a direct screenplay (mostly dialogue you would hear while around friends) which is good for the type of movie being made here.
The film gains much controversy by stating whether its true to life, or just a mindless depiction of what could happen in the city.

 Moondance - Kids&Film
Kids take stock of the diverse array of social causes and issues around which our world's young people are becoming mobilized to illuminate and act upon the interconnections between circumstances at home and around the world.
Through film, and with their intense and dogged curiosity about how the world works, they can find a new way to communicate to a wider audience how to change the status quo and interface between world youth activism and global engagement, and the ways young activists can work together to tackle their common global issues.
We are building a bridge, through the art of film, to encourage international awareness and understanding for young people from the elementary grades through high school.

Her brief was to find films "by, for and about kids" but it was also important, says Bidinost, that the films she chose would inspire audience members, that they would "give them a door into another world, to the way other kids live".
In some of the child-produced films made in association with adult filmmakers, animation is a way of allowing children to reflect on their sense of the present and their dreams for the future.

 Screening for kids - Film - www.theage.com.au
Gradually, the concept of the “family film” was introduced in the US: a product understood to have universal appeal, based on the notion that childhood is a universal experience, but incorporating elements that would appeal to older viewers — stars known to adult audiences, child actors who presented an engaging, appealing image of youth.
The “family film” of the 21st century has a more inclusive, economically expansive notion of “point of view”: it’s a blockbuster that can be sold to multiple age-groups.
Films are marketed beyond their audience, in ways that can seem cynical, at the very least: awareness of Spider-Man and Hulk can begin in the kindergarten, with reinforcing items such as superhero pyjamas and colouring books.

SCREEN IT! ARTISTIC REVIEW: SPY KIDS
Two kids, with their own set of problems that some viewers will be able to identify with, discover that their parents are really former spies who've come out of retirement.
As such, the film is then set up like an old, funhouse ride in that those kids, and thus the audience, are taken on a wild and imaginative journey complete with cartoonish, two-dimensional villains and the thrill of not knowing what new discovery will be around the next corner.
While that somewhat emulates how most real kids would probably react if faced with the same amount of overwhelming information about their parents and all of the spy material, it does diminish some of the film's fun, at least for adult viewers who usually prefer to see characters who act rather than react.

Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams: (Robert Rodriguez/John Debney) With the Spy Kids franchise being the sole dream of director and producer Robert Rodriguez, it is no surprise that Rodriguez would fill some of the composing duties for the franchise himself.
The Spy Kids films are aimed at the fantasies of kids, and thus the score plays to several cliches in action and thriller music that appeal to kids.
The first Spy Kids score may have been a funky adventure given the broad collection of talent, and Spy Kids 2 is more of a stock action/adventure score that one would expect from John Debney, with the unpredictable elements thrown in by Rodriguez.

 CBC.ca - Arts - Film - Kids Rock
The formula is this: a small group of kids is pushed to greatness on a public stage by heretofore untapped internal forces (that’s the feel-good part that makes the films so charming) and also aggressive, competitive grown-ups (the less-discussed feel-bad part).
Yet while today’s kids are coddled, they’re also fetishized for behaving like adults; when the barely pubescent dancers of Mad Hot Ballroom dropped their sexiest moves at a screening I attended, the audience breathed a giant awww.

Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The entire film is an exercise in recapturing a feeling of wonder and danger in the moviegoing experience, providing kids with something a little meatier than the plaintive milquetoast complaint of Stuart Little 2, the paternalistic racism of Spirit, and the astonishingly grating experience of The Master of Disguise.
Where the film fails is not its energy or subtext, but in that certain lack of freshness endemic to sequels.
Whatever the case, Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams for all of its positives, is a picture that almost undeniably gains a great measure of esteem and indulgence for the depressed climate of movies for children nowadays.
