Dr Kieran Deeny, a GP who surprised many in the 2003 Assembly elections by topping the poll as Independent candidate and capturing a Stormont seat, urged SDLP leader Mark Durkan in an email last week to consider not fielding a candidate in West Tyrone, which currently has a Sinn Fein MP.
