  Kieran Perkins:
Despite all this success, Kieran thinks there is too much emphasis on winning in sport, and this is one reason for the falling participation rate among children.
KIEREN PERKINS: Well, it upsets me, because there is this image being sent out there now that if kids are to be successful sportspeople, they have to do it from the age of three, four, five.
KIEREN PERKINS: It is. This is an issue that's being talked a lot about in Australian sport at the moment.

For example, the Olympic swimmer, Kieran Perkins successfully sued Telstra for the unauthorised use of his image in an advertisement.
The court held that the use of the photograph together with the statement inferred that Perkins preferred Telstra's service to that of Optus when in fact he had not made a statement about his preference.
Perkins' status as a celebrity known by the public as an endorser of a variety of products assisted the court to find that Telstra's conduct was misleading and deceptive.

The reason why the 1-start rule was brought in was because when we had two starts 98 per cent of those first starts were abused by athletes who false-started on purpose who wanted to delay the event, who wanted to upset their competitors and it really was a waste of time...
But whatever Perkins' heroics in pool (and this pundit considers his 1500m win in Atlanta one of Australian sport's finest moments) his remarks here are remarkably off-keel.
If Perkins' scenario -- Thorpe falling from the blocks at the blocks in Athens -- was to eventuate, this pundit cannot really envisage a chorus of Aussies crying foul.
