  Untitled Document
The Kiev rangefinder camera was a near carbon copy of the pre-war German Contax II camera.
Given their reputation it is somewhat surprising that there are so many used cameras available today--and in many cases the later Kiev models are cheaper that the Leica copies that were made for the masses.
The Contax was also the model for the Nikon S rangefinder camera, however the lens mount was slightly different on the Nikon and it had a conventional cloth shutter instead of metal.

The Kiev camera is no plagiarism at all, but a legal replica of the Contax camera, made in the Soviet republic of Ukraine.
Before the war, Contax cameras were made by Zeiss Ikon AG in Dresden, the capital of the German camera industry - now in the Russian zone of the occupied Germany.
Unfortunately, the camera was heavy and clumsy, and was not accepted, even by the hard supply controlled, and for the consumer limited, market in the communistic Soviet Union.

 New Kiev Camera Web Site
As someone who has been buying/selling/using Kiev equipment for some years, I have to present, yet again, the major consideration: the fact is that the Aresenal (maker of Kiev) factory's FA&T (= final assembly and test) is simply horrid.
The cameras which Kalimex sells are Kiev cameras, but they are not made in the Arsenal factory / not made on regular Arsenal production lines.
Having studies the wealth of material on Kiev cameras I have come to the conclusion that there are many small independants who conduct their business in an informal (but I must stress completely honest) way.
