In the 9th century, Kiev was conquered from the Khazars by the Varangian ( Swedish Viking) Oleg.
Kiev was sacked by Russians ( 1169), Polovtzians and Mongol raiders in the 12th and 13th centuries.
However, with the failure of the Kiev Operation and the end of Polish-Soviet War, after the Peace of Riga in March 1921, the western part of the traditional territory had been incorporated into Poland, and the larger, central and eastern part became part of the Soviet Union as the Ukrainian SSR.

Kiev Offensive (1920) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kiev Offensive (or Kiev Operation) was an important military operation, carried out by Polish Army and allied Ukrainian forces during the Polish-Bolshevik War, from April 1920 to June of the same year.
From the perspective of staff maps in Warsaw it was clear that the renascent Polish Army was too weak to withstand both the offensive in the southern sector of the front in Ukraine and the spring offensive prepared by the Bolsheviks in Belarus and to the north of the Prypeć Marshes.
However, the commander of the Polish 3rd Army located around Kiev, General Edward Rydz, was seeking a way to repel the upcomming Russian assault rather than withdraw and even proposed the General Staff to regroup all of his forces to the city of Kiev and defend there until relieved.

Operation Bagration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During World War II, Operation Bagration was the general attack by Soviet forces to clear the Nazis from Belarus which resulted in the destruction of the German Army Group Centre, possibly the greatest defeat for the Wehrmacht during the war.
Despite the huge level of forces involved, Soviet front commanders left their opposite numbers in complete confusion about the axis of attack until it was too late for the Germans to recover the situation.
Operation Bagration also cut off and isolated the German units of Army Group North fighting in Courland.

Active operations of the 5th and 6th armies diverted considerable forces of the opponent, which put forth serious help for the defenders of Kiev who from July, 11-14 stopped the enemy and conducted fights to the west of Svyatoshino.
The enemy was compelled to stop its approach to Kiev and to begin its evasion with two flanks: German-fascist 1st the tank group has turned on the south, and the basic forces of the 6th army have concentrated in the area of Korosten.
The Kiev defensive operation, despite of unsuccessful outcome, rendered serious influence on the subsequent events near Moscow and on failure of the German plan of lightning war against the USSR.

The Eastern Front which was opened by Operation Barbarossa would become the biggest theatre of war in World War II, with some of the largest and most brutal battles, terrible loss of life, and miserable conditions for Russians and Germans alike.
Before Operation Barbarossa, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union were nominally on friendly terms, having signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact shortly before the German and Soviet invasion of Poland.

A formal peace treaty, the Peace of Riga, was signed on March 18, 1921, dividing the disputed territory between Poland and Soviet Russia.
Both states claimed the victory in the war: the Poles rightfully claimed the successful defense of their state, while the Soviets claimed the repulse of the Polish Kiev offensive, which was sometimes considered part of a foreign intervention during the Russian Civil War.

The Viazma operation was a particular success because there the encirclement took place only 100 kilometers east of Yartsevo and 170 kilometers from Roslavl—in other words, close enough to the starting point of the offensive for the infantry to move in rapidly and help the armored units seal off the pocket (see Figure 43) {3}.
If the operations of parts of the Nineteenth, Sixteenth, Twentieth, and Thirty-second armies and the Boldin Group [a force made up of three tank brigades and [291] one tank division] encircled west of Viazma are assessed from that point of view, these units must be given credit for their heroic struggle.
The failure of this plan was predetermined because the operation had to be carried out too late in the year—during bad weather—and also because the delay had allowed the enemy to mobilize fully and deploy its strategic reserve.
