Kiev (Ukrainian: Київ, Kyiv; Russian: Киев, Kiev), also Kyiv, is the capital and largest city of Ukraine, located in the north central part of the country on the Dnieper river.
Historically, Kiev is one of the most ancient and important cities of the region, the center of Rus' civilization, survivor of numerous wars, purges and genocides.
Kiev was probably founded in the 5th century and functioned as a trading post between Constantinople and Scandinavia.

Kievan Rus′ (Russian: Ки́евская Ру́сь, Kievskaya Rus; Ukrainian: Ки́ївська Русь, Kyivs’ka Rus’) was the early, mostly East Slavic¹ state dominated by the city of Kiev (Russian: Ки́ев, Kiev; Ukrainian: Ки́їв, Kyiv), from about 880 to the middle of the 12th century.
Kievan Rus′ was not able to maintain its position as a powerful and prosperous state, in part because of the amalgamation of disparate lands under the control of a ruling clan.
In 1299, in the wake of the Mongol invasion, the metropolitan moved from Kiev to the city of Vladimir, and Vladimir-Suzdal′ replaced Kiev as a religious center for the northern regions.

The three original members of the band KIEV, Maïa Vidal, bassist-vocalist, Taylor Quan, guitar, Anna Leicter, guitar, and Sylvie Froncek, drums, met as high school freshmen playing classical music, in Ithaca, NY.
While many of their early gigs were with other high-school bands, Kiev also had opportunities to play in local bars to adult audiences.
The band discovered that their chosen name, KIEV, was also in use by a West Coast band, so they changed their name to Kievan Rus.
