Kihon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kihon (基本)(Japanese) is the term for the basic techniques that are taught and practiced as the foundation of most japanese budo arts.
A proper and rigid Kihon practice is essential to all elements introduced later.
From a classical karate-do standpoint, Kihon are practiced every class and seen as the road to improvement of all movements of greater complexity.

 -= Karate kihon =-
Kihon training involves concentrated analysis and repetition of basic motions in an effort to establish habits.
Kihon training should be done slowly and with intense concentration while technique paths and muscle memory (habits) are being established.
It cannot be emphasized enough that the student must concentrate on proper form during this training, lest habits such as incorrect posture, "muscling" or pushing, and loss of body connection be established.

The karateka must not only understand the principles of kihon, he must give them effect with strong, elastic muscles.

If a weakness in the practise on several items of the exam may possibly be counterbalanced by a better performance on others, an unsatisfactory performance in the KIHON is however eliminatory.
Moreover, it provides the student with a set of keys, tools, which enables him to go further into the practise, with the understanding of the principles and their use in other circumstances.
As we can see, the Kihon katas are a mine of teachings, a concentrate of aikibudo.

The first two techniques required for advancement in Yoshinkan Aikido, based on the 2004/2005 syllabus, that have the best and most direct link to kihon dosa is katate mochi shihonage 1 and 2 and Shomen uchi ikkajo osae 1 and 2.
The kihon dosa I think that is missed in most of the techniques is the application of the hiriki no yosei ni shift with the front knee moving forward to the 2nd step (cross-step) in ikkajo osae ichi "type" techniques with the shuffle - crossstep - crosstep circle pattern.
