 The Môri generals
Hiroie was Kikkawa Motoharu's son and succeded his elder brother Motonaga when the latter died in 1587.
After the battle, Hiroie was disappointed to discover that Ieyasu had no intention of rewarding the Môri for their inactivity, though he did increase Hiroie's own fief somewhat.
Kikkawa Hiroie, however, positioned to his front, had decided not to challange the Tokugawa, and would not move.

Hiroie made his family's residential buildings at the foot of Mt. Shiroyama and built a castle on the 210-meter northern peak of this mountain to prepare against wars, putting to good use a natural setting - the Nishiki River which served as an ideal outer moat of the castle flows around the mountain.
The present castle was rebuilt in 1962, armor and arms of the time are displayed inside the castle, and the top floor is an observatory from which the view of the city is splendid.
After the Meiji Restoration (1867) the Kikkawa clan's residential area at the foot of the mountain was opened to the public as a beautiful park which is now called Kikko Park.

Kikkawa Hiroie was born in 1561 as "Saijumaru" to Kikkawa Motoharu, one of the Mori clan's winningest generals.
Due to this, Ankokuji Ekei, Natsuka Masaie, and Mori Hidemoto were not able to attack without Kikkawa's forces (and because the latter's forces were in the way), and thus the eastern side of Sekigahara was relatively inactive for the duration of the battle.
Ever the loyal one to his clan, Hiroie pleaded with Ieyasu to be able to divide up his land with Terumoto, and succeeded.

It was daimyo Kikkawa Hiroyoshi who ordered the construction of the bridge in 1673 to solve the problem of crossing the Nishiki-gawa every time it flooded.
The most advanced civil engineering techniques of the time were used, and even though the 210-metre-long bridge was built without a single nail, bound together with clamps and wires, the original stood in place until Typhoon Kezia swept it away in 1950.
Adjoining the bridge on the west bank of the Nishiki-gawa is a landscaped park, Kikko-koen, once the estate of the ruling Kikkawa clan.

 Môri Terumoto
The combined Môri faction (to include Môri Terumoto, Môri Hidemoto, and Kikkawa Hiroie) was the largest contingent in Ishida's army, but in the actual battle, it barely moved an inch.
Sulking in Osaka Castle, Terumoto had been convinced by Kikkawa Hiroie that the best course of action now was to do nothing, indicating that both considered Ishida a lost cause - or at least one not worth fighting for.
Kikkawa let this reach Ieyasu, who suggested that inaction would bring rewards if the Eastern Forces won.

This happened despite the fact that Hiroie had returned the reward given to him for his betrayal and begged Ieyasu to leave Terumoto's domain intact.
It would be some 260 years before Mori's Choshu domain and Shimazu's Satsuma domain jointly overthrew the Tokugawa Shogunate to avenge the defeat and indignities they suffered in the Battle of Sekigahara.
