I was fascinated by the anecdotes about Kikuchi Dairoku, arguably a primary source for the Western concept of the brilliant, focused Japanese student.
I found the book to be of great interest, the student in question Kikuchi Dairoku was a genius coming from a long line of geniuses his story is both fascinating and enthralling.
Its central figure is Kikuchi Dairoku, who was one of the pioneering Japanese scholars to leave Japan to study at Cambridge University during the period known as the Meiji "enlightened rule." The pivotal point in Japanese modernization also appears to rest upon Kikuchi Dairoku's shoulders as well.
