I'm no expert when it comes to japanese composers but my favourite is probably Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Especially his soundtrack for a movie called Gohatto really hit me. It was hypnotic, threatening and beautiful all at the same time, and you really can't imagine the movie without it.
I have watched "Suna No Utsuwa" starring Nakai Masahiro and it was such a good tv series, it is no wonder it won awards.
