Her mother was Catherine Van Rensselaer, born in The Crailo, Greenbush (Rensselaer, N. Y.), November 4, 1734, died in the Schuyler Mansion, Albany, March 7, 1803, and was daughter of Johannes Van Rensselaer and Engeltie (Angelica) Livingston, the latter being the daughter of Robert Livingston, Jun., twelfth mayor of Albany.
Van Rensselaer found it necessary to look critically after the interests of his Manor, for in order to secure good returns it was essential that the lands should be cultivated, and while speculators would buy lands, the farmers, or laborious tillers of the soil, were unwilling to contract for the fee.
Van Rensselaer, urged by his party to uphold their moral force in the controversy, consented to stand as a candidate for the assembly, and despite his popularity was beaten.

Van Rensselaer therefore gave him direction to follow in making his entries and statements, claiming that any other procedure would "leave everything confused and mixed up." He complained that Andriessen laid certain actions before the patroon which should be laid before the commis.

Kiliaen had great difficulty attracting farmers to these new lands and was forced to offer wages instead of shares in the early years.
Van Rensselaer's final tract was more than twice the size of that the Company had officially offered: 23 miles on both sides of the river and extending back 24 miles on both sides (the final Van Rensselaer holdings were over 1,000,000 acres).
With this much land Van Rensselaer expected to make substantial profits, but most contemporary accounts agree that if he made any profits at all from his land they were very small (he died in 1643).

Van Rensselaer's patroonship was said to he the only really successful one among all those attempted.
Van Curler was said to have been baptised Feb. 6, 1620; so de Hooges was probably born between 1620 and 1623, as it is unlikely that he was younger than 18 when he came over in 1641.
That he stood high in the opinion of van Rensselaer a letter to van Curler shows for he told the latter "not to lightly reject the advice of Hooges although he is younger than you and not so experienced.

Standing near the center of what was once the 700,000-acre estate of Kiliaen Van Rensselaer, who managed the first and only successful patroonship established by authority of the Dutch West India Company, its role in Dutch life in the Albany region was a major one.
Van Rensselaer was a wealthy diamond merchant of Amsterdam, whose agents obtained a vast tract that extended from the mouth of the Mohawk River southward for 20 miles along both sides of the Hudson, and a total width of almost 50 miles.
It is known that the Van Rensselaer family occupied the house as early as that year and continued to live in it until 1871.
