The kilij (Turkish kılıç or pala) is a sword used by the Ottoman Empire and Turks.
While Turks were known for their swords with curves, kilij is estimated to appear around the late 15th century.
Some of these shorter Kilij are also referred to as "Pala (sword)" but there does not seem to be a clear cut distinction in naming.

Kilij Arslan then took over the Seljuk army and set up his capital at Nicaea, killing his own father-in-law, the emir Chaka of Smyrna in order to stabilize the Sultanate.
However, his archers could not penetrate the line of defense set up by the Crusader knights, and a separate group of knights was able to capture the Turkish camp on July 1 (see Battle of Dorylaeum).
Kilij Arslan retreated, and did not attack the Crusaders again, although he destroyed crops and water supplies along their route.

Manuel I Comnenus had been at peace with Kilij Arslan II, the Seljuk Sultan of Rüm, during the 1170s.
It was a fragile peace, as the Seljuks wanted to push westwards, further into Asia Minor, while the Byzantines wanted to push eastwards to recover territory they had lost since the Battle of Manzikert one hundred years earlier.
In 1175 the peace fell apart when Kilij Arslan refused to return territory he had conquered from their common enemy the Danishmends.

Scimitar (aka "Shamshir" or "Kilij")   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
This is a very common style saber, normally associated with mounted "horsemen." This example has a shallow curve, but normally, these have a very pronounced curve; they are very useless as thrusting weapon and are generally accepted as a slashing weapon.
The Persian and Turkish saber versions are referred to as scimitars or kilij, while the Indian saber versions are referred to as shamshirs.
This example could be from either region as both used a similar "pistol-grip" or "marmeluke" hilt design; however, the blade is more European is shape so I suspect this is of the Persian or Turkish variety.

The Double Kilij Blade (Dou‘Kilij, Dou‘Ki)
The forerunner of the Double Kilij was the Single Kilij, a weapon invented by Kadar the True, the man who became later the very first H‘rul Zheon.
The actual Double Kilij was the idea of Asilah, daughter of Asra, an outstanding woman in the Shen-Siuu tribe.
She enhanced the old simple Kilij to a new weapon, one which was both physically daunting as well as deadly, but also one that would allow for fights among tribe members without leading to death.

Swords of Islam - NetSword Discussion Forums
First, I always thought the term scimitar was simply an anglacized version of shamshir, which I took to be a single edged, single handed sword with a curved blade and usually a small section of the crossguard lapping over the blade.
Some say the scimitar is the same as a kilij, but I thought the kilij had a broader blade with a greater curve.
The kilij is actually the Ottoman term for their deeply curved sabres with a widened tip which is termed the yelman.

Spurred by the emperor, the sultan invited Chaka to a banquet and murdered him (1094).

Fascinating too, I never realised that the Scots also used kilij blades as well as broadswords.
Just out of curiosity, is the original sword your reproduction is based on, an actual Turkish kilij or Scottish copy of a kilij?
I also thoroughly agree with your decision not to use a tulwar blade, the shape is quite different to a kilij.
