Killary Harbour was at one time believed to be one of Ireland's few fjords, but is now considered to be probably a drowned valley; it is a splendid sheltered deep-water anchorage and was, at different times, a base for the British Fleet and a refuge for German U-boats.

The Soil and Underlying Rocks   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
In the west of Galway, notwithstanding abundant evidence of glaciation and the presence of numerous glacial deposits in the uplands as well as in the valleys, the soil has, to a very large extent, resulted from the weathering of the native rocks.
According to the geological survey, a considerable number of glacial deposits occur between Lough Mask and Killary Harbour and over the low-lying area extending between the wide upper portion of Lough Corrib and the Atlantic, i.e., in Connemara proper.
On the Atlantic side they all but extend to Killary Harbour in the north, and in the south they come into contact with the granitic area in Bertraghboy Bay, not far from Carna.

Killary Harbour was gouged out by a vast glacier over 10,000 years ago, although this flooded valley is more a fjord than a harbour and extends for over 8 kilometres before reaching the open sea.
Nowadays, the waters of Killary are dotted with mussel rafts and salmon cages as commercial fin-fish and shellfish farming provide a welcome boost to the local economy.
Stories from more recent times relate German and British submarines finding shelter in the neutral waters of Ireland during the 2 nd World War, and stories of local fishermen sailing out to British naval vessels to register their anger by hurling stones and eggs, are only the tip of the iceberg.
