The band's early years is where the best Maiden albums come from, with most feeling that either Killers, Number Of The Beast, or Piece Of Mind are the band's best (personal vote: Killers).

And they certainly remain a fan favorite, with a stunning 13 albums placing in the Internet Top Ten lists.

Killers, released in March of 1981 on EMI in the UK, was the second album by Iron Maiden.
The album is an unusual one in it that it features two instrumentals and was written almost exclusively by Steve Harris with only minor assistance from the rest of the band.
It was the first of their albums to feature guitarist Adrian Smith, and the last to feature vocalist Paul Di'Anno who left the band mid-tour due to problems with alcohol and narcotics.

 The Iron Maiden Commentary
The song was later recorded by Samson on their 1980 album Head On whereas Iron Maiden recorded it in 1981 on Killers.
Killers is not a concept album, but many of the songs do share a certain commonality.
It is an interesting and complex thread, which explores the "killers" concept from several different perspectives including the angry searcher, the fleeing suspect, the innocently accused, the cold-blooded killer, the repentant disciple, and finally the reformed drifter.

 Daily Vault - April 1, 2002
And in terms of track selection, Iron Maiden do pretty well by including "Wrathchild" and "Running Free," the two tracks which could be called their biggest hits up to that point.
And I do have to admit, including "Killers" was a good move, since it's such a solid version that it would definitely attract listeners back to this cut on the Killers album, if not the whole disc.
However, I will concede that the faster tempoed portion of this song shows how much tighter of a musical outfit Iron Maiden had become since their self-titled release in 1980.

John J. Miller on Iron Maiden on National Review Online
When Iron Maiden fans pick their favorite album, most settle on one of three from the band's heyday in the early 1980s: The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, or Powerslave.
And the titles don't help, either: Two of the band's first three albums are called Killers and The Number of the Beast.
Despite those silly album covers and names, the group's lyrical interests were downright mature — and several notches above everything else in the genre.

Although the release was recorded in a hurry, it was nonetheless a hit in the U.K. due to the single "Running Free." Iron Maiden's 1981 follow-up, Killers, displayed a harder approach to their music than before, and also saw the replacement of Stratton with Adrian Smith.
Parsons replaced Dennis Stratton, and the band made its record debut in 1980 with the self-titled Iron Maiden album.
Iron Maiden have always been an underground attraction; although failing to ever obtain any real media attention in the U.S. (critics claimed them to be Satanists due to their dark musical themes and their use of grim mascot "Eddie"), they still became well known throughout the world and have remained consistently popular throughout their career.

And while it lacks some of its predecessor's inspired songwriting, Mob Rules was given a much punchier, in-your-face mix by Birch, who seemed re-energized after his work on New Wave of British Heavy Metal upstarts Iron Maiden's Killers album.
In fact, all the ingredients which had made their first outing, Heaven and Hell, so successful are re-utilized on this album, including legendary metal producer Martin Birch (Deep Purple, Whitesnake, etc.) and supporting keyboard player Geoff Nichols.
1981's Mob Rules was the second Black Sabbath album to feature vertically challenged singer Ronnie James Dio, whose powerful pipes and Dungeons and Dragons lyrics initially seemed like the perfect replacement for the recently departed and wildly popular Ozzy Osbourne.
