  Killian documents - dKosopedia
The documents were the basis for a 60 Minutes Wednesday segment that aired on September 8, 2004, presented by CBS anchor Dan Rather.
The majority of typewriters available in 1972 used fixed width fonts, and most of the authenticated documents from the TexANG were typed using fixed width fonts commonly associated with typewriters; one document released by the Pentagon on September 24, 2004 used a proportionally-spaced font somewhat similar to the font used in the Killian memos [75].
The majority of independent document authentication experts contacted by the major news media and bloggers have indicated a strong likelihood that the Killian memos are forgeries constructed with the use of modern word processing software and printer technology, and "aged" using multiple generations of copying to blur the characters.

I wanted the panel to know that far from simply taking documents and rushing them onto the air, we had done a complicated and multifaceted check on how these new documents fit with the ones we knew to be real, and used that comparison in making a judgment that the story was ready to air.
Document and handwriting analyst Marcel Matley felt very strongly that this signature was a classic Killian signature, where the lieutenant colonel had a habit of turning the tail of the “y” at the end of Jerry to the top of the “K” on Killian.
In the previous Killian document, when Colonel Killian references the “recent activity is out side his rating period,” it is clear tha t the May ’73 activity is what he is referencing.

 Authenticity Backed on Bush Documents
After CBS News on Wednesday trumpeted newly discovered documents that referred to a 1973 effort to ''sugar coat" President Bush's service record in the Texas Air National Guard, the network almost immediately faced charges that the documents were forgeries, with typography that was not available on typewriters used at that time.
Analysts who have examined the documents focus on several facets of their typography, among them the use of a curved apostrophe, a raised, or superscript, ''th," and the proportional spacing between the characters -- spacing which varies with the width of the letters.
Bouffard, the Ohio document specialist, said that he had dismissed the Bush documents in an interview with The New York Times because the letters and formatting of the Bush memos did not match any of the 4,000 samples in his database.

washingtonpost.com: Expert Cited by CBS Says He Didn't Authenticate Papers
The analysis shows that half a dozen Killian memos released earlier by the military were written with a standard typewriter using different formatting techniques from those characteristic of computer-generated documents.
In a CBS News broadcast Friday night rebutting allegations that the documents had been forged, Rather displayed an authenticated Bush document from 1968 that included a small "th" next to the numbers "111" as proof that Guard typewriters were capable of producing superscripts.
In fact, say Newcomer and other experts, the document aired by CBS News does not contain a superscript, because the top of the "th" character is at the same level as the rest of the type.

Knox discredited the Killian documents on 60 Minutes, CBS News continued its vigorous defense of the documents in its September 15 Statement.

Byron York on George W. Bush & National Guard Documents on National Review Online
The document — with Killian's signature — was among a thick stack of papers from Bush's Air National Guard years released in February by the White House.
For example, none of the documents released by the White House bears the letterhead "111th Fighter Interceptor Squadron/P.O. Box 34567/Houston, Texas 77034," and yet that is at the head of two of the CBS documents.
But on the two CBS documents with Killian's name on them, he is simply called "Lt. Colonel" or "Lt. Colonel/Commander." Judging by the earlier documents, it would have been somewhat out of character for Killian to refer to his rank without mentioning the Texas Air National Guard.

WorldNetDaily: CBS News denies Bush docs forged
Spokeswoman Kelli Edwards said she was aware of the charge that the documents, purportedly produced in 1972 and 1973, appear to have been forged with a modern word processor.
Killian, who died in 1984, was Bush's squadron commander in the Texas Air National Guard.
Among the assertions "60 Minutes II" derived from the documents – four memos Killian wrote to himself – were that the commander was pressed to "sugar coat" a performance evaluation for Bush and that Bush did not follow an order to report for a physical.

The documents were presented as authentic in a 60 Minutes Wednesday broadcast aired by CBS on September 8, 2004, during the 2004 US presidential campaign, but had not been properly authenticated by CBS and were subsequently characterized as likely forgeries by a number of expert forensic document examiners (see: Killian documents authenticity issues).
The documents had been obtained by CBS News producer Mary Mapes from Lt. Col.
Killian endorsed the rating officer's evaluation of Bush, which in part described him as "an exceptionally fine young officer and pilot".

"These documents do not appear to have been the result of technology that was available in 1972 and 1973," said Bill Flynn, one of country's top authorities on document authentication.

Several of the comments and phrases used in the documents are used ONLY in the Army National Guard.
The answer to the question as to why Burkett might have screwed up the abbreviations or rank is that Burkett was in the Army National Guard, if I am not mistaken, during the early 1970s.
Note that Jerry Killian was an Air Force officer whose rank abbreviation would have been Lt Col whereas Bill Burkett (if he was an Army National Guard officer) would abbreviate his rank as LTC.
