Killiecrankie, Tenandry and Strathgarry on a small group tour of Scotland   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Killiecrankie is one of the famous names of Scotland, renowned both for its history and its scenery.
The Pass of Killiecrankie lies three miles north of Pitlochry, and for a mile threads the deep, steep, thickly-wooded gorge of the Garry, between a spur of Ben Vrackie (2757 feet) and Tenandry Hill, with the village at the north end.
This high back-road drops as steeply beyond, to rejoin the A 9 by another bridge, at Killiecrankie village, passing a lofty-sited dun on the way.

 Battle of Killiecrankie
Those who make the unfortunate result of this movement the rule of their judgment, will be apt to condemn Mackay's conduct on this occasion as rash and injudicious, but when his own reasons are duly weighed, it is difficult to see how he could have acted otherwise than he did.
There can be no doubt, that had he been as successful at Killiecrankie as he was unfortunate, he would have been applauded for the exercise of a sound discretion, and regarded as a tactician of the highest order.
Some of the clans which were expected had not yet joined, as the day appointed for the general rendezvous had not then arrived; but as Dundee considered it of paramount importance to prevent Mackay from establishing himself in Athole, he did not hesitate to meet the latter, whose force numbered about 4,000.

BBC - History - The Battle of Killiecrankie 1689   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
In the Glorious Revolution, the Scottish Parliament announced that the Roman Catholic King James VII had forfeited his throne and that his daughter, Mary and her husband William of Orange, who were both Protestant, would replace him.
They also finally settled the religious arguments in Scotland by declaring that the Church of Scotland was Presbyterian and that the monarch had no power over it.
Supporters of King James, known as Jacobites ("Jacobus" is Latin for James) attempted to start a war to restore him to the throne, famously overpowering the Williamite forces at the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689.

 The Battle of Killiecrankie
The men of Lochaber's charge made it through to the enemy line, where Mackay's foot were "swept away by the furious onset of the Camerons." Of the 240 reported Cameron men who took the field at Killiecrankie, one half perished in the battle, mainly from the flanking fire by Levin's battalion.
Few of the enemy escaped, but having lost their brilliant commander, the war may be said to have ended - before it was well commenced - by a Highland victory; perhaps the most brilliant on record.
One hundred and fifty years later poets were still telling the tale of that great victory in the Pass of Killiecrankie.
