Killing Zoe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Killing Zoe is a 1994 movie directed by Roger Avary, and starring Eric Stoltz as Zed and Julie Delpy as Zoe.
Upon arriving at his hotel room, he spends some time with a call girl, Zoe (Delpy), and after having sex (with Nosferatu playing on the television), they start to talk and see they have a connection (including the fact that both of their names start with the letter 'Z').
"Killing Zoe" was the first feature film to utilize a swing-and-tilt bellows lens on a motion picture camera.

DVD Verdict Review - Killing Zoe
Killing Zoe was originally intended for release several months ago as a bare bones, pan and scan disc, this was not to the satisfaction of the movie's writer/director Roger Avary and he started an online petition to Artisan to have the film done right.
From the postcard tour of Paris, to the almost sweet lovemaking with Zoe and then through the drug crazed night of "living" and culminating with the films bloody final third the two men provide a striking array of images with many shots that linger in the memory.
I mentioned earlier that Killing Zoe was originally intended as a pan and scan release but due to the power of the Internet those plans were changed.

The cinematic release of Killing Zoe was originally timed to capitalise on Quentin Tarantino mania, which followed the release of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction in the early Nineties.
Zoe's writer/director is his friend and long time collaborator, Roger Avary, which is evident in his style of filmmaking.
Zed and the prostitute Zoe (Julie Delpy) hit it off, but his friend, played with wonderfull psychotic glee by Jean-Hugues Anglade, soon arrives to show him his version of the real Paris, which turns out to be an orgy of drugs and traditional French music, in seedy underground nightclubs.

Killing Zoe might be referencing the only good in Roman Polanski's Frantic during its warm-up shots, as we soar, from the car passenger's point of view, through Paris traffic.
Little does anybody know that Zoe is a teller there by day, and her endangerment as a hostage is crosscut with ignorant Zed's progress in cracking the code to a basement vault.
Neither Nikita nor Zoe is lacking in imagination, per se: the common flaw between them is that they meet a cul-de-sac at the halfway point, and, after much scrambling, only recover from this in their epilogues.

"Killing Zoe" is a great film that sinks deeper into a surreal hell of violence without sacrificing any of the crucial empathy for the lead characters portrayed by Stoltz, Anglade, and Delpy.
He mentions early on the night before to Stoltz' character that he caught AIDS from the needle and so he comes across as reckless and increasingly insane as time goes on as he experiences life with no hesitations because it might as well be his last day as far as his character's actions are concerned.
Artisan Home Entertainment presents "Killing Zoe" with a great anamorphic widescreen transfer at an aspect ratio of (1.85:1.) The colors are deep and rich and there is no sign of compression grain.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: Killing Zoe
Killing Zoe stars Eric Stoltz as Zed, an apathetic American safecracker visiting Paris to pull of a major bank heist with estranged boyhood friend Eric (greasy Jean-Hughes Anglade).
The indifferent "connection" between Zed and prostitute Zoe (Julie Delpy) is a sham compared to the passionate slacker-whore love story in True Romance, as are the assumed but pallid bonds between fellow criminals, and Avary's flip depiction of potentially fatal drug use is flaccid next to the harrowing overdose in Pulp Fiction.
Artisan's Killing Zoe is a fine-looking disc in anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) with Dolby 2.0 Surround.

That's not to say that she doesn't have a pivotal role in the way the heist is played out, but Avary chooses to devote far more of his attention on Eric, a character who has slipped into madness through drug use and a death sentence from AIDS.

Tarantino replied to his naysayers with Kill Bill, a two-part homage to some of his favorite films that features such obvious plagiarizing, it practically is excused.
The highly rated episode, entitled Grave Danger, shared a very similar situation from Tarantino's second Kill Bill film: CSI Nick Stokes is captured and buried alive in a Plexiglas coffin while an Internet camera broadcasts the whole thing to CSI headquarters.
The episode was delayed in being shown in the UK as the broadcast date coincided with the terrorist attacks in London and it was felt that the underground theme in the episode would cause offense.
