 Killone Abbey
Killone Abbey, situated on the banks of Killone Lake some 3 miles south of Ennis, County Clare, was an Augustinian nunnery founded in 1190 by Donal Mor O'Brien, King of Thomond and Munster and dedicated to Saint John.
The ruins of the abbey, accessible through land used for grazing cattle, are located in the grounds of Newall House, and include substantial remains of the abbey church together with a crypt.
A narrow (and somewhat restrictive) stone stairway leads between the altar and the east window to a ledge atop the remains of the south wall of the church, where an overview of the grounds may be seen with care (there being no safety features incorporated).

Clare Abbey Civil Parish, County Clare, Ireland, Lewis, 1837 description ©Jane Lyons
This parish is situated on the river Fergus, and on the road from Ennis to Limerick, and was the seat of a richly endowed abbey, founded in 1195, for Augustinian friars, by Donald O’Brien, King of Limerick.
In the Roman Catholic divisions this parish is the head of a union or district, called Clare, comprising the parishes of Clare-Abbey and Killone, in each of which is a chapel ; that at Clare is a thatched building, which it is intended shortly to re-erect on a larger scale.
The remains of the abbey consist of a tower in tolerable preservation, surmounted by graduated battlements, and the ivy clad walls of the abbey church, which together form a very picturesque object when viewed from a distance.

 Killfiddane
The economy of these new religious houses was secured by endowing them with a rectorial income or tithe from various parishes in their neighbourhood in return for which the canons exercised a pastoral ministry, either directly by their own staff or sometimes by vicars (curates) which they appointed in the various parishes.
Kilfiddane was included in the charter to Clareabbey in 1189 and its rectory (parochial income) later became part of the endowment to Killone Abbey.
In 1651 Cromwellian soldiers desecrated the Abbey, hence saw the end of the Canons in the Kilfiddane parish.

The Augustinian Houses of the County Clare:Clare, Killone, and Inchicronan
Among the monastic orders few will deny the high standing of the Augustinians, yet, from whatever cause, their history in many important houses in western Ireland is very little known, for they had no Wadding or Bruodin to collect their scattered traditions after the great dispersion.
Their foundation is traditionally attributed to King Donald More O’Brien, but documentary evidence seems forthcoming in only one place.
