Perhaps Kilmainham Gaol’s most famous occupant was Eamon de Valera, the future president of Ireland, released July 16, 1924, shortly before the gaol was closed permanently.
Kilmainham Gaol is most famously remembered as the place where the fourteen leaders of the Easter Rising of 1916 were executed.
If Kilmainham Gaol seems to look slightly familiar, it may be because of its appearance in several films, including Michael Collins and the 1966 English version of The Italian Job.

Viking burials were first recognised at Kilmainham, Dublin, in 1836 and further finds were made in 1842-48 and 1861 when a railway line and railway station were being constructed, in 1866 during gravel quarrying and in 1933-34 during the making of the World War 1 memorial park.

We learnt that during the famine people used to commit crimes just to get into the jail because at least in the jail they had food and some chance of survival.
We went to the yard and saw where the leaders of the 1916 rising were shot and where they were held.
We had studied about the 1916 rising for a good while and when we went to Kilmainham we saw where Eamon De Valera, one of the very famous prisoners was held in the east wing.

We are a proud and historic people here in Inchicore and Kilmainham and we only wish for even half of what we see working so successfully around a whiskey museum in the IAP for Smithfield and it’s community.
