Sir Alexander Fleming (August 6, 1881 – March 11, 1955) discovered the antibiotic substance lysozyme and isolated the antibiotic substance penicillin from the fungus Penicillium notatum.
Fleming was born on a farm at Lochfield in Ayrshire, Scotland and was schooled for two years at the Academy in Kilmarnock.
He later attended St Mary's Hospital medical school in London until World War I broke out.

In October 1998 St Joseph's Academy, Kilmarnock, merged with St Conval's High School, Cumnock, to form a single secondary school retaining the Academy's name, serving as the Roman Catholic secondary school for the whole of East Ayrshire.
As there is a physical distance of over 16 miles between the two campuses (see picture 1) and many youngsters already travelled distances to reach secondary school, clearly the newly formed school faced major hurdles in its aim of creating one community.

At Knox Academy (Haddington) all staff were issued with a list of greetings and basic classroom instructions in French, Italian, Spanish, Gaelic and Portuguese to be used throughout the week and there were new signs in French and Italian and foreign language posters throughout the school.
Frédéric Dindeleux, French captain of Kilmarnock Football Club, launched a balloon to mark Comenius week and there were presentations and displays by pupils showing the international activities they are involved in.
Language departments often expressed the view they were Cinderella when it came to new technology and that to have the latest equipment would make their subject more immediately relevant to Orkney pupils who after all live on the very edge of Europe.
