Kilmarnock (Cill Mhearnáig in Scottish Gaelic, and Killie locally) is a large burgh in East Ayrshire, Scotland, with a population of about 60,000.
Kilmarnock's traditional industries were carpets (manufactured by BMK) and other textiles, as well as making locomotives (Andrew Barclay and Sons) and valves (Glenfield and Kennedy).
Kilmarnock has failed to capitalise on Ayrshire's growing tourist industry, although a four-star hotel recently opened next to Rugby Park, the home of Kilmarnock F.C., and some new resturaunts have opened in the town centre.

PRISON chiefs were today probing a riot at Scotland's only private jail last night when up to 40 inmates went on the rampage.
Several small fires were lit, a communal room was destroyed and attempts were made to flood the prison in Kilmarnock during the incident.
The riot happened when prisoners refused to return to their cells in E wing, which houses short-term inmates who are serving less than four years for repeat offences such as theft and minor assaults.

The prison is the first in Scotland to be built under the private finance initiative and became operational on the 25 March 1999.
As with all Scottish Prisons, HM Prison Kilmarnock is subject to the Prisons and Young Offenders Institutions (Scotland) Rules 1994, as amended, and prisoners have the same rights at Kilmarnock as they would have in any other Scottish Prison.
Although Kilmarnock Prison is operated by PPS, it is part of the SPS estate and prisoners remain under the care of the Scottish Prison Service.

All areas of the prison were relatively clean and conditions for prisoners were decent; the standards for remand prisoner s compared favourably with the best found elsewhere in the SPS estate.
The ferocity of the tendering system means that every new private prison that comes on stream does so with fewer staff on lower pay, because the wages bill is the big cost in running a prison, and it is the only cost that the operators can address in order to remain competitive.
