  Byte
A byte is commonly used as a unit of storage measurement in computers.
Byte is often abbreviated B and sometimes b, though b is incorrect as that is a better abbreviation for bit.
The term "byte" was coined by Werner Buchholz in 1956 during the early design phase for the IBM Stretch computer; originally it was described as 1 to 6 bits (typical I/O equipment of the period used 6-bit chunks of information).

The byte is also the basic unit of measurement for computer storage, storing the equivalent of one character.
In decimal systems, kilo stands for 1,000, but the computer world is based on a binary system of twos instead of tens.

In abbreviations, a capital "B" signifies a Byte (usually an 8-bit word, although according to the IEEE definition, on a 16-bit architecture, a byte may mean a 16-bit word), whereas the lowercase signifies a bit.
That is kilo means one thousand, mega means one million, giga means one billion (and note here I mean an SI billion, 10^9, and not an old-english billion, which was a million millions).
In December 1998, the IEC made an approval to differentiate between 1024 bytes and 1 kilobyte by the definition of a new term, a kibibyte (kilo-binary byte).

1000 bytes = 1 Kilobyte, 1000Kilobytes = 1 Megabyte, 1000Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte.
However, the size of a byte is determined by the architecture of a particular computer system: some old computers had 9, 10, or 12-bit bytes, while others had bytes as small as 5 or 6 bits.
On a note of agreement, the byte is too close to the bit in it's abbreviation; I proposed the C++ term 'character', as this represents a minimum storage unit of binary data, while leaving it open to changing from 8 to 16 to however many bits are needed.

Since shortly after the French Revolution of 1789, scientists--and eventually computer scientists--have found it convenient to refer to large quantities of various units of measure with verbal prefixes and letter symbols.
Thus kilo- (symbol K) and mega- (M) stand for 10**3 and 10**6, thousands and millions.
Therefore, a backward switch in midstream from a Greek-conceptual to the original Greek-numerical basis (using kilo- for "thousand") is announced as the "expedient" thing to do, simultaneously preserving tradition and leaving the way open to further expansion.
