What is kilobit? - a definition from Whatis.com
It's commonly used for measuring the amount of data that is transferred in a second between two telecommunication points.
Kilobits per second is usually shortened to Kbps.*
For example, 28.8 kilobits per second (Kbps) is 28,800 bits per second.

The binary forms of kilobytes and megabytes have become standard throughout the computer industry, although they are incorrect uses of the SI prefixes (in the IT field lowercase "k" is used to describe decimal kilobits, and capital "K" is used for binary kilobytes).

The bit is commonly used to measure the quantity of data transferred in one second between two points of transmission.
The Kilobit a second is usually shortened in kbps or Kbps.
Although the bit is the unit of the binary numerical system, the bits in the data communications are discrete impulses of the signal and were historically counted by using the decimal numerical system.

When looking at DSL speeds, be aware that the speeds are listed in Kilobits per second (Kbps) and not Kilobytes per second (KB/s).
This is important to understand the speed you will actually receive when your DSL circuit is up and running and you begin downloading or uploading information over the Internet or your network.
Below is a comparison table of the differences between a Kilobit and a Kilobyte.

While trying to investigate mysterios packet loss on a link limited by tc to its theoretical capacity, I realized that tc (and some other tools) treat kilobit as 1024 bits per second.
This is manifestly incorrect, as it is pretty much standard for equipment specifications to be given as 1000 bit per second=kilobit.
This may be a just a heads-up to those unaware, but, it would be nice to change tc to use correct multipliers (possibly with a switch to revert to old behavior).

Satellite Forum FAQ 2. General Information   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Kilobit (Kb) = 1024 bits (2 ^ 10) "binary kilobit"
So in order to get the approximate number of Kbps (kilobits per second) you need to know that there are 8 Kb (kilobits) in every KB (kilobyte).
Thus if your browser is showing that you are downloading a file at 176 KBps you would then multiply 176 times 8 which would translate to 1,408 Kbps.

Now that modem hardware allows regular phone lines to provide connections reaching 56 kilobits per second and DSL provides reasonably priced high speed service, ISDN is not as popular as it once was.
