Kilobyte - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A kilobyte (derived from the SI prefix kilo-, meaning 1000) is a unit of information or computer storage equal to either 1024 or 1000 bytes.
The overwhelming popularity of the 1024 definition means that anyone using "kilobyte" to mean 1000 in these situations is likely to cause confusion.
However, it is common to use 1000 when deriving kilobyte measures from quantities which are not based on powers of two, such as clock speeds or bitrates.

This is also what most people (before exposure to computers) think a kilobyte is. This leads to some confusion when the novice purchases computer equipment, as the computer will report a smaller amount than the manufacturer stated.
A kilobyte consists of 1024 bytes of computer data.
Now, I realize this may be a shock to those of you, who for your whole life, thought a kilobyte was 1000 bytes.

Technically, therefore, a kilobyte is 1,024 bytes, but it is often used loosely as a synonym for 1,000 bytes.
In computer literature, kilobyte is usually abbreviated as K or Kb.
To distinguish between a decimal K (1,000) and a binary K (1,024), the IEEE has suggested following the convention of using a small k for a decimal kilo and a capital K for a binary kilo, but this convention is by no means strictly followed.

A bit is represented with a lowercase "b," whereas a byte is represented with an uppercase "b" (B).
A kilobyte is eight times larger than a kilobit.
So one kilobyte is actually 1024 bytes, and 1024 of those is (1024 x 1024) 1048576 bytes.

The nearest binary number to 1,000 is 2^10 or 1,024; thus 1,024 bytes was named a Kilobyte.
Instead of using the metric prefixes for multiples in binary code, the new IEC standard invented specific prefixes for binary multiples made up of only the first two letters of the metric prefixes and adding the first two letters of the word "binary".
Thus, for instance, instead of Kilobyte (KB) or Gigabyte (GB), the new terms would be kibibyte (KiB) or gibibyte (GiB).

KiloBytes is a storage measurement not a speed measurement.
There is widespread confusion regarding the difference between binary and decimal kilobytes and megabytes.
Since the abbreviation for kilo is a lowercase k, this is used for decimal kilobytes and an uppercase K is used to indicate binary kilobytes.

The 50 kilobyte per second difference is down to the overhead involved in actually moving a real file, rather than just doing baggage-free read operations, as HD Tach does.
Ignore that extra and it's better than 465 kilobytes per second write speed, but if you take the real copy time into account it's less than 130 kilobytes per second.

There is often confusion about bandwidth due to the difference between kilobytes and kilobits.
Bits are used to talk about data transfer rates (1 kilobit = 1000 bits), while bytes are used to talk about storage size calculations (1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes).
So a 28.8 Kbps (kilobits per second) modem can actually only handle a maximum of 3.6 KB/s (kilobytes per second) of data, including the connection to the ISP, the data holding the TCP/IP packets together, and other essential information.

A Kilobyte is 1,024 bytes, and it is more properly used to measure data storage, not network data-transfer rates.
Whether you're sending data as kilobits per second or as Kilobytes per second, many of the throughput-affecting factors affect both rates equally.
So, while a received Kilobyte may not actually equally a full Kilobyte of useful information, the same is true if you measure it as kilobits pers second.

Although a kilobyte is exactly 1024 bytes, the following approximations are useful.
Since a kilobyte is 1024 bytes, a megabyte is "1024 times 1024" bytes, which is 1,048,576 bytes altogether, which is slightly more than a million bytes.
So it holds 64 kilobytes, which is slightly more than 64 thousand bytes (since a kilobyte is slightly more than a thousand bytes).

The kilo, mega and giga prefixes, borrowed from the International System of Units, the modern metric system, designate 1,000, 1 million and 1 billion respectively.
Yet a kilobyte, as computer experts know, is actually 1,024 bytes, and a megabyte is really 1,048,576 bytes.
This discrepancy stems from the need to write electronic information in binary code, using only two digits, ones and zeros, while the metric system is based on 10 digits.

For small files, both systems provide comparable read performance, but LFS offers superior performance on writes.
