Under AES Kilroot's 200-metre chimney is a 520MW dual coal and oil fired facility that produces one third of the electricity used in the province.
Kilroot maintains a stockpile of 60,000 to 100,000 tonnes of coal, and 20,000 to 30,000 tonnes of oil.
Kilroot was originally designed to burn oil, which was then the cheapest fuel available, but a review of future generation policy in Northern Ireland in 1985 recommended a conversion to dual coal/oil firing.

Kilroot, which is owned by American company AES, burns coal 97% of the time, because at present that is the cheaper option.
The initial allowance for 2005-8, which was published in February, would have curbed Kilroot's annual output of CO2 to 6.7 million tonnes, just 74% of its usual emissions.
It was as a result of the 1970s oil price crisis that Kilroot was converted to coal, and today it continues to provide a valuable element of fuel diversity.
