Davis wrote to Carnes after the song was released and stated that she was very pleased with the song as it made her seem very up to date with her grandson.
Carnes has written three number one country songs: “The Heart Won’t Lie”, a hit duet for Reba McEntire and Vince Gill, “Don’t Fall In Love With A Dreamer”, a huge hit duet she performed with Kenny Rogers, and “Make No Mistake She’s Mine”, a duet performed by Kenny Rogers and Ronnie Milsap.

I have been a fan of Kim's since the age of 14 in 1980 when she cracked the top 5 with Kenny Rogers and "Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer" and feel that this CD is by far her best.
Kim's voice is at the best it has ever been and I would like to thank her for such an exceptional cd.
Carnes drives the melodic line with her familiar vocal strength but controls the texture which allows the listener to fully appreciate the song’s compelling message.

The resulting songs are rich, with memorable melodies, surrounded by rootsy guitars (from Richard Bennett, Billy Panda and others) and uplifted by Carnes' voice and by her Dylan-inspired Blonde on Blonde phrasing.
But Carnes strays far from ditty-land on the album's unmistakable highlight, a beautifully written (with Berg and Gary Harrison), brilliantly sung ballad called If I Was an Angel that fully illustrates Carnes' power as a vocalist, writer and producer.
She sings the heck out of it, though, giving us another addition to the decades-long list of reasons to listen to Kim Carnes.
