However in 1980, Kim was arrested and sentenced to death on charges of sedition and conspiracy in the wake of another coup by Chun Doo-hwan and a popular uprising in Gwangju, his political stronghold.
Kim's return was initially met with a huge backlash, but the situation became favorable for him when the public perceived the incompetency of the incumbent government which let the nation's economy collapse in the Asian financial crisis just weeks before the presidential election.
Kim Dae-jung was the first president to serve out his full term who came from the Jeolla region in the southwest, an area that traditionally has been neglected and less developed, at least partly because of discriminatory policies of previous presidents.

Sentenced to death in 1996, Chun was later pardoned by President Kim Daejung, whom he himself had sentenced to death some 20 years earlier.
Chun was a graduate of the eleventh class of the Korean Military Academy in 1955.
Many politicians were arrested, including opposition politician Kim Dae-jung, who was later sentenced to death despite protests from the U.S. Later, Chun commuted Kim's sentence in return for U.S. support.

Chuch'e is an ideology geared to address North Korea's contemporary goals--an independent foreign policy, a self-sufficient economy, and a self-reliant defense posture.
Kim Il Sung's enunciation of chuch'e in 1955 was aimed at developing a monolithic and effective system of authority under his exclusive leadership.
Kim's past leadership record was put forward as the "guide and compass" for the present and future and as a source of strength sufficient to propel the faithful through any adversity.

Arafat was awarded a share of the prize even though he was listed as a terrorist for years, and with the current situation in the Middle East, one has to admit that getting a peace prize doesn't make one a peacemaker.
So, my point is that although Kim Jong-il might never make humanitarian of the year, he does deserve some of the credit for the peace talks, just the way other "former" terrorists and authoritarian rulers have been credited for their efforts.
As for awarding Kim DJ for his efforts to bring democracy to Korea, I think that is a good thing, but he was by no means the only one, or some might say not even the main one.
