I went to the launch by Kim Beazley of this new book by my friend John Edwards in Sydney on Friday night, then a few of us (including the author and the leader) had a fun dinner at the Sea Bay chinese restaurant in Pitt Street (with an excited manager getting photos etc).
This exposure to the ideas championed by Edward Shann and others meant that Curtin was a stronger proponent of the rules-based international trade environment (through the IMF, GATT etc) than he might otherwise have been.
Talking to Kim Beazley, I think everyone came away believing that he really is serious about becoming PM this time and I think the challenges and disappointments of the previous few years have probably sharpenned his focus.

 Gough Whitlam Summary
Edward Gough Whitlam was born on July 11, 1916, in Kew, an upper-class suburb of Melbourne, Australia.
Edward Gough Whitlam AC QC (born 11 July 1916), always known as Gough Whitlam (pronounced "Goff"), Australian politician and 21st Prime Minister of Australia, was the only Australian Prime Minister to be dismissed by the Governor-General.
After 1996 he was scathingly critical of John Howard, but also of Kim Beazley, who was Labor leader from 1996 to 2001 - this feud apparently went back to Whitlam's dislike of Beazley's father (Kim Beazley, senior), who had been a minister in Whitlam's government.
