Richey is a stellar songwriter (with several hits by others to her credit) whose own records straddle the rock/country divide, placing her squarely in commercial limbo.
Kim Richey has always been a hard one to categorize(as if she really needed to be), but unfortunately in a day when commercial success seems to be fueled by what radio format your music can be programmed into, Richey's always been left off the boat.
Richey's songs here are definately given tons of room to breathe here, with the production using more typically country arrangements and instrumentation(mandolins, banjos)than previously heard in her music.

Country Music Article - Kim Richey hopes life is more sweet than bitter, May 1997
Richey learned that she may have broken a blood vessel in a vocal chord.
Richey's brand of country is in the same vein as Yearwood or Linda Ronstadt, a more pop oriented, singer-songwriter style.
Richey's attitude was the song would have a "bigger boost" with Yearwood at the vocals with the "bottom line, they'll do a great job." Richey gave the go-ahead on a Sunday night for Yearwood to record the song.

Kim Richey grew up in southwestern Ohio, right on the line dividing rock-speaking from country-speaking lands, and her musical career has turned on intriguing tensions between the two styles.
Richey drew plenty of non-country fans, but the country instrumentation that pervaded her first CD set off the dryness of her voice to best advantage.
Now Richey is touring in advance of the release, finally, of Rise, slated for this fall.

Evidence of Kim's country roots is hard to find (a mandolin appears among the credits but identifying it might be challenging) although some people will classify this as an alt-country album.
Richey is still writing mature songs that emulate real emotions and feelings that people go through on a day to day basis.
Kim's voice is gorgeous, her lyrics are genuine, sometimes, funny, ironic, even profound and occasionally just nice - I am looking forward to hearing more from Kim.

Kim Richey is the latest addition to a distaff population of recent arrivals that includes Eliza Gilkyson, Patty Griffin, the three Dixie Chicks principals, Shawn Colvin, Caroline Herring, and Danni Leigh, all of whom have acquired an Austin ZIP code within the past few years.
Originally, says Richey, she wanted an album title that revolved around "amber," because she felt the time spent writing and recording the album in Bottrell's Northern California enclave was a discrete and timeless period, unique to itself.
Richey's ambitions, like the goals of the characters in her songs, are optimistic but grounded.

When Kim Richey's self-titled debut disc arrived in 1995 to critical acclaim, the public, along with country radio, largely ignored the singer/songwriter.
This time people began to take notice, and although sales were still low, Richey garnered a new set of fans who became entranced by her exceptional songwriting.
The two selections from Glimmer, her glossy misstep produced by Hugh Padgham (the Police, Genesis), weigh down the middle of the disc, but her four songs from Rise, including the tender "A Place Called Home," showcase an artist who is still developing, growing, and has so much more to offer.

Richey`s material possesses the same slow-burning passion as Lucinda Williams` best work.
Although Rise was her most accomplished and focused work, there are brilliant songs from previous albums that are among her best and are waiting to be rediscovered.
Taken from her debut disc, the quiet rhythms and delicate arrangement of "Can`t Find the Words" perfectly capture the essence of Richey`s music, while "Those Words We Said" is the hit that never was as a chugging organ drives the song`s aching melody.

Richey's third album, Glimmer, is both a departure from her first two albums and a major disapointment.

Bitter Sweet - Kim Richey - Music Reviews
Richey's songs are intimate examinations of romantic relationships between women and men, more often than not ones that have gone awry.
But Richey sings even the most broken-hearted of the songs with a sense of optimism, and thus avoids sinking into maudlin self-pity.
One such example is the single "I'm Alright," which starts with the throwaway line, "After all was said and done," followed by the abrupt, "There was nothing left to do." Throughout Bitter Sweet, Kim Richey makes it plain that she was one of the most gifted songwriters working out of Nashville in the late '90s.

Kim Richey made her name in as a hitmaking Nashville songwriter, but her fourth solo release, Rise, is about as far from contemporary country as you can get.
