Kinder Scout is a high windswept upland gritstone plateau, most of which stands at around 600 metres above sea level.
The Kinder plateau rises steeply from the surrounding ground and the edges are studded with rocky outcrops and crags.
Kinder is most popularly approached by walkers either from Edale village, up Grindsbrook, or via Jacob's Ladder and on to Kinder Low, or from Hayfield up William Clough and on to the north-west corner of the plateau.

When I first mentioned the idea of having a Birthday Party at Kinder Downfall, it was suggested that instead of continuing round Kinder Scout and down Jacob's Ladder, we could make a much more direct route back to the cars, straight back the way we had come.
Kinder Scout is renowned for its wet, boggy surface and it is impossible to walk straight, across the top.
Time and daylight were rapidly slipping away, so once we reached Kinder Downfall, it was only for a couple of sandwiches and a quick look at the spectacular sight of the whole waterfall being blown back up.

Kinder Scout itself was used to hold grouse for local landlords.
The Kinder Scout trespass was called by one small group, the British Workers' Sports Federation (BWSF), largely made up of members and supporters of the Communist Party, which enjoyed significant working class support.
When the Kinder Scout mass trespass took place, dozens of police were there--private gamekeepers and officials from water and gas companies which owned land in Hayfield.

This small quarry was a very significant place in the annals of hill walking as it was here that the mass trespass onto Kinder Scout started on 24th April 1932.
Leave the quarry and head north-east along the lane in the direction of the Kinder Reservoir.
The first, taken by this walk, is to climb steeply on the reconstructed path to reach the trig point on Kinder Low.

The walk up Kinder from the west side is one of the classic excursions of the Peak District.
It takes in some magnificent gritstone scenery, including Kinder Downfall, and, if the weather is fine, there are excellent views down towards the Manchester conurbation.
The best weather for this walk is a windy autumn day - then the weather will be clear, the hillside colours at their best, and the Downfall at its most impressive - being blown back by the wind.

Kinder Scout requires some navigational skill to negotiate its highest points.
We had the good fortune to do the walk during a sustained period of dry weather and on a particularly beautiful day, when Kinder Scout was at its most benevolent.
After a well earned break we continue along the Pennine Way to Kinder Downfall at which point we leave the southerly bound Pennine Way, taking a north-easterly, then turning south-easterly footpath, heading for the Kinder Scout area.

Kinder Scout, the upland plateau crossed by this first section of the Pennine Way, is a large area of blanket bog.
The path then follows the edge of the moor for another mile before descending steeply to the Ashop Clough col. From the col the path enters the third and final sub-stage of today’s walk, along the lonely and drab moraine ridge of Mill Hill and Featherbed Moss.
This is the watershed between the drainage systems of the Trent (behind you) and the Mersey (ahead of you), and it appears to retain enough moisture to keep both rivers flowing in perpetuity.

The Kinder Children's Choirs of the High Peak have been one of the major success stories in the cultural life of the High Peak during the past decade.
Named after Kinder Scout, the high land mass which dominates the area, the choirs involve more than 100 children and young choral students between the ages of eight and eighteen from all parts of the High Peak and beyond, and are administered by a registered charitable trust.

The Duke of Devonshire said a mass trespass on grouse moors at Kinder Scout, Derbyshire, during which gamekeepers clashed with ramblers demanding the right to walk on the estate, was "shaming" for his family.
Until 1932 the land around Kinder Scout, at the start of the Pennine Way, was controlled by its wealthy landowners.
Following the rally, chaired by former Ramblers' Association president, singer and comedian Mike Harding, walkers re-enacted the trespass on to the slopes of Kinder Scout, much of which is now owned by the National Trust.

Kinder Scout is a big boggy plateau that marks the first high hills in the Penines.
Its highest point is at 636m, but it can hardly be called a summit as the area is so flat.
The best bits of the plateau are around the edges where the rocks are exposed and the ground drops away steeply, for example at the Kinder Downfall.

Whilst I agree that Kinder Scout and the Aonach Eagach are quite different in character, I feel the Prof is obviously not fully aware of the nature of Kinder Scout, and hence something more must be included in his Coefficient.
Anyone who knows Kinder Scout well will agree that the summit plateau is in fact far from flat.
I think not, for then he would surely know about the countless peat cloughs that would be encountered and all the falling in and climbing up out that these entail.
