Neither Hobart nor Jack won; instead, the first winner of the Kinetic Sculpture Race was Bob Brown of Eureka, California.
During the 1970s, the race adopted its present three day, cross-country format and became the "Triathlon of the Art World." Machines were built to take on mud, sand, water, gravel and pavement as well as some of the steepest hills in North America.

"Blame" is an interactive kinetic sculpture consisting of a robotic arm with a pointing hand on the end that scans the gallery, and when it finds a viewer, the arm stops with the hand pointing at the viewer, and then the sculpture proceeds to blame the viewer for some horrible crime against society.
The "brains" of "Blame" is a PIC 16F648A flash-based, 8-bit microcontroller from Microchip Technology which orchestrates all the elements of the sculpture.

 Kinetic Sculpture Race - Rules
All sculptures must pass a technical safety inspection which will be conducted by the Humboldt County Sheriff's Marine Posse immediately prior to the first water crossing.
Sculptures must be propelled unassisted into, through, and out of each water terrain obstacle by the pilots (on-board throughout) in order to avoid a one hour penalty.
Your Sculpture may be moved sideways, or backwards either by pilots of Pit Crew, of both to gain supposedly better condition, but the Sculpture cannot be moved from the course.
