Political Animal: Comment on Saddam Hussein: Evil Tyrant or Misunderstood Patriot?
Saddam Hussein was a zit that needed to be popped, but we shouldn't let that fact make us feel better as to the smelly means by which we accomplished it.
Though the Bush administration and its supporters began by insisting that Hussein be removed because his regime constituted a threat to international security, they ended by arguing that Hussein's treatment of his own people was a sufficient reason.
This puts many who opposed the war in the position of arguing that tyrants like Hussein must be allowed to continue in power as long as they confine their activities to their own borders.

At that time, U.S. President George W. Bush alleged that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda might conspire to launch terrorist attacks on the United States[1], basing the administration's rationale for war, in part, on this allegation and others.
The official report issued by the 9/11 Commission in July 2004 addressed the issue of a possible conspiracy between the government of Iraq and al-Qaeda in the September 11 attacks.
