King Arthur (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
King Arthur is a film first released in the United States on June 28, 2004, dubbed as "The Untold True Story That Inspired The Legend" by Touchstone Pictures.
In the course of this mission, Arthur encounters and rescues Guinevere (Keira Knightley), a Woadish princess, from the imprisonment and torture of the Roman citizen he is charged with rescuing.
It would appear that the Arthur depicted in the film is based most closely upon Ambrosius Aurelianus, the Romano-Briton who fought against the Saxons in the 5th century, and was probably the leader of the Romano-British and Celts at the Battle of Mons Badonicus.

Movie Review | King Arthur: Director's Cut (2004) Clive Owen, Keira Knightley
I never saw "King Arthur" when it showed up in theaters (and went out as a box office bust), so this review is solely based on the DVD version, which is the "Unrated Director's Cut" (but is actually R-rated, as opposed to the theatrical version, which was PG-13).
Arthur's men are vexed, and appropriately so, as the mission means facing the oncoming Saxon hordes as well as avoiding the Woads, indigenous rebel Britains led by some grungy guy name Merlin, who resides in the woods and attacks wearing green paint.
Which isn't to say "King Arthur" doesn't work without the action, as it is a visually stunning film to look at, and Fuqua drowns much of the film in fog and mist, the two types of natural wonders Britain is most known for, I'm told.

It is weird that the movie never mentions the Emperor of Rome, who were still around and kicking by this movie's timeline (the last Emperor of the Wastern Roman Empire was deposed in 476), and credits all political actions impacting the movie's plot as coming from the Pope of all people.
Arthur has been away from Rome so long he forgot it was ruled by an autocracy, not a republic, for a really, really long time by then, although to be fair the Romans thought of themselves as living in a republic even after the Empire collapsed.

SPLICEDwire | "King Arthur" movie review (2004) "King Arthur" review, Antoine Fuqua, Clive Owen, Keira Knightley
According to the studio advertising campaign, the 2004 mega-budget version of "King Arthur" is "the untold true story that inspired the legend" -- you know, the factual version in which Arthur is a brooding bore, Lancelot has hip, runway-model facial hair and Guinevere is a half-naked post-feminist warrior hottie.
Arthur and his knights (Sarmatian soldiers reluctantly bound to imperial service) take it upon themselves to defend the now unguarded territory against invading hoards of barbarian Saxons from the north.
Franzoni ("Gladiator") attempts to justify his modern-grrrl take on Guinevere by portraying her as a Pict -- a culture that may have had female warriors and may have gone into battle naked and painted blue to intimidate the enemy (although probably not in the dead of an English winter).

I saw the movie too, and my initial reaction was not all that favorable, but I have found myself continuing to think about it, which is always a good sign.
What Lancelot said to Arthur, that he was fighting for a world that didn't exist, was a running theme in the movie.
I think Arthur finally realized it, too, but his response (of which we only saw the very beginning, at the end of the movie) was to try and create it, at least where he lived and during his lifetime, thus the legend of Camelot.

But King Arthur doesn't add anything unique to the Arthurian legend, instead coming across as a History Channel-meets-Braveheart popcorn drama too self-serious to be fun and too fast and loose with its selection of sketchily known facts to be taken seriously in the field of Arthurian studies.

And in the true story, Arthur traveled to Rome, became a Christian and a soldier, and was assigned to lead a group of yurt-dwelling warriors from Sarmatia on a 15-year tour of duty in England, where Guinevere is a fierce woman warrior of the Woads.
The movie ends with a pitched battle that's heavy on swords and maces and stabbings and skewerings, and in which countless enemies fall while nobody that we know ever dies except for those whose deaths are prefigured by prescient dialogue or the requirements of fate.
There is a kind of direct, unadorned conviction to the acting of Clive Owen and the others; raised on Shakespeare, trained for swordfights, with an idea of Arthurian legend in their heads since childhood, they don't seem out of time and place like the cast of "Troy." They get on with it.
