King Arthur is the second teaming of super producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Antoine Fuqua (the twosome last collaborated on Training Day), and probably the best compliment I can pay the film is that it isn't the fluffy, disposable actioneer the trailer suggests.
King Arthur traces the origins of the title character and his men, the famed Knights of the Round Table.
This King Arthur tale took me a little off guard as it trades in the magic and rather dark fantasy elements of John Boorman's outstanding Excalibur, for a more gritty and humanized take on the famed story, bringing to mind films like Braveheart and Gladiator.

Yet 'King Arthur' is worth seeing for its impressive battle scenes - especially the face-off on a lake of cracking ice - and for Stellan Skarsgård, whose performance as Cerdic, the ruthless Saxon leader, is a masterclass in mumbling understatement that makes a potentially cardboard character come to life.

Not being Roman by birth, Arthur is torn when he learns that he and his men will not receive their discharge papers on the eve of their 15 years of service, but have one last task to perform before they will be freed from service.

Unfortunately for Arthur, the movie has decidedly been set in the 5th century AD, which means that the Roman Empire is on its last breath and that they are pulling out of Britain.
What was most frustrating about this movie is that the creators of this movie go to such lengths to try to trick us into thinking that what we are watching is a true story, while we all know that there is very little water under the bridge.
I have no problem seeing Guinevere (the movie never explains whether she is a princess or any kind of royalty) shooting a bow and arrow, but when she dons her absolutely dreadful war gear and starts killing men by the dozens with a sword, I had to scoff.

Instead we are presented with a gritty, supposedly more realistic view of Arthur and his knights, one that bears little resemblance to traditional legend and only hints at the love triangle between the story’s central players.
King Arthur has got to be one of the worst movies i've seen in recent years.
Although it's supposed to show what King Arthur may have been like, that doesn't mean that it will be enjoyable and with Clive Owen and his monotone voice almost putting you to sleep, I would also suggest that you stay away from this movie, believe me, you won't regret it.

I love the whole Arthur myth and its epic scale of story-telling which in a lot of ways bugged me when I watched this new version but when I was able to separate the two as different entities I began to see what the filmmakers were trying to make.

The anonymous Empire scooper furnished a couple of dozen images showing Arthur in his Roman Empire-esque armor and the Knights of the Round Table, as well as some shots of director Fuqua calling the shots behind-the-scenes.
Of course, the movie may have nothing to do with the story I read, but those green lines on her face and body look disturbingly familiar to the cover of Borchardt's book.
