  King Benjamin's Farewell Address, 124 B.C.
King Benjamin desired to give a farewell address to the people and to declare that his son Mosiah would now be king.
King Benjamin's speech begins in Mosiah 2:9 and continues through Mosiah 4, with additional comments from Benjamin in Mosiah 5, but I have included some of the surrounding text to provide background and to show the effects of his words.
Benjamin's speech is not only one of the most complete ancient farewell addresses known anywhere, but it also strongly manifests those elements that are most deeply rooted in early biblical tradition.

The Book of Mormon's King Benjamin: A Masterful Discourse   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Benjamin was the son of Mosiah, the first Nephite king of Zarahemla.
The occasion is the crowning of Benjamin's eldest son, Mosiah, to be the new King.
Benjamin's reign had been a time of Nephite prosperity and we would be surprised if pride and class distinction, the common companions of prosperity, were not also a problem in Benjamin's kingdom.

 Mosiah 2
Benjamin is not pretending that they have had no responsibilities to the king, but that those responsibilities have not been "grievous" nor for the intent of enriching the king.
Benjamin has, through the use of his personal example, created a tangible way in which the assumed exclusive relationship of king and deity may be expanded to all, and may be easily enjoyed by all.
Benjamin has opened up to his people the nature of the servant/master relationship, assured them that they are capable of fulfilling it, described some of the blessings that flow from it, and indicated that they will always be in a position of thankfulness to their God (their master) because of his abounding grace.

King Benjamin or Mosiah: A Look at Mosiah 21:28
The problem is fairly obvious, for Mosiah 6:5 reads, "And king Benjamin lived three years and he died." Fifteen chapters later, however, he is alive and well in the 1830 Book of Mormon.
And Ammon said unto him: I can assuredly tell thee, O king, of a man that can translate the records; for he has wherewith that he can look, and translate all records that are of ancient date; and it is a gift from God.
And behold, the king of the people who are in the land of Zarahemla is the man that is commanded to do these things, and who has this high gift from God.

Said King Benjamin, "How knoweth a man the master whom he has not served, and who is a stranger unto him, and is far from the thoughts and intents of his heart?" (Mosiah 5:13).
King Benjamin wanted his people to be filled with the love of God, to grow in the knowledge of that which is just and true, to have no mind to injure another, to live peaceably, to teach their children to love and serve one another, and to succor the needy, including beggars (see Mosiah 4:1230).
The children of Christ are described by King Benjamin as being submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, and--then the sobering line--"willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon [them], even as a child doth submit to his father" (Mosiah 3:19).
