Arthurian comic books were produced in greater numbers during the 1950s and 1960s, including several appearances by Arthurian characters in the books of new publisher Marvel Comics.
While predominantly a concern of comic book writers and artists, creators of comic strips also contributed to the growth of the corpus during this period, and Arthurian elements appeared in Dilbert, The Far Side, Frank and Ernest and Hagar the Horrible.
Adopting a formulation by folklorist Carl Lindahl, this essay explores Arthur's "return-through-reenactment," which Torregrossa subdivides into returns by reenactment (including material on the popular X-Men comics), invocation and substitution, as evidenced by a variety of comics produced both in the United States and abroad during the second half of the twentieth century.
