 King Follett's Discourse - ChristiansOnline.CC - A Christian Forum
Two Mormon missionaries scheduled a meeting on Tuesday of last week with a friend of mine (who, incidentally, is married to the daughter of a Baptist pastor; she came in the Catholic Church shortly before marrying my friend), and he invited me over to chat with the missionaries.
When I mentioned the Follett Discourse, they acted as if they had never heard of it before, and when I elaborated upon its nature, the Mormon missionary who did most of the talking started to act like he had possibly heard of it before, and I sensed that they were lying to me.
The KFD should not be viewed outside of its historical and religious context.

The King Follett Discourse was a funeral sermon preached by Joseph Smith on behalf of Elder King Follett, an early convert to Mormonism, who, on March 9, 1844, was crushed to death when a bucket of rocks fell on him as he was walling up a well.
In his 1978 article entitled "The King Follett Discourse: Joseph Smith's Greatest Sermon in Historical Perspective," LDS writer Donald Q. Cannon, noted, "These men, experienced in note-taking, often recorded sermons given by Church authorities.

It makes it pretty clear that JS's devoloving theology was motivated by his need to justify his extra marital affairs, not only to his wife, who never bought it, despite being threatened with divine destruction if she didn't, but also to himself and his followers.
The first vision account accepted today was written in 1838 and published in 1842 in the Times and Seasons, the King Follett discourse was presented in 1844.
I can only speculate why the first vision wasn't mentioned in the King Follett discourse, but it was published already and perhaps may have been common knowledge.

The King Follett Discourse is the name given to an address the Prophet Joseph Smith delivered in Nauvoo, Illinois, on April 7, 1844, at a general conference of the Church.
The discourse may be one of the Prophet's greatest sermons because of its comprehensive doctrinal teachings.

Both of these, a Conference talk given on April 7, 1844 (commonly known as the "King Follett Discourse") and the discourse of June 16, 1844, deal with the subject of the plurality of Gods and the concept that God was once a human being as we are now.
It was partly because of this "new revelation" on the nature of God that a number of Joseph's followers began crying "fallen prophet".

The King Follett Discourse is not exhaustive as Joseph refrained from sharing all the Glory he had been taught as he knew most members would not accept what he knew to be True, so he gave them what they could handle.
Given the importance of what he taught, and the reoccurrence of these topics all through his life, we maintain the King Follett Discourse to be a major foundation of Mormon spirituality.

The Doctrine of Exaltation, or Becoming a God
Instead, the significance of the King Follett Discourse lies in the fact that in it the Prophet Joseph provided a systematic overview of doctrines touching upon God, human nature, and the human potential for exaltation—godhood.
The Prophet Joseph opens the King Follett discourse by posing this question and parenthetically remarks, foreshadowing his later comments in the address, that without knowledge of the nature of God, human persons will not accurately understand their own identities.
This General Conference talk became known as the "King Follett Discourse" because its immediate aim was to memorialize a particular Mormon elder, King Follett, who had died in Nauvoo on March 9, 1844.

The reading that I give the KFD is the view that is consistent with the idea of JS’s life as a crescendo-it seems to me that y’all see Joseph simply playing a different tune altogether and with a different musical era rather than a symphony that crescendos.
The KFD does not go into any sort of detail regarding a Christology of the sort that would allow us to conclude that *either* Christ or his Father were men radically unlike us.
But JS is very clear in both the KFD and Sermon in the Grove given about six weeks later that the Father is the Most High God —; the Head God —; who assembled all of the other gods in council and they are the sons of God.

In this respect, they accept the King James Version of the Bible, the landmark Protestant version that does not recognize the deuterocanonical books.1 Mormons also believe that Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism in 1830, partially completed a "divinely inspired" re-translation of the Bible in which he "restored" it to its "original" form.
We have already discussed the fact that the King James Bible does not include the deuterocanonical works and that scholars of all walks of life agree that the Joseph Smith version, specifically, is plagued with problems.
The problems with Mormon theology are, however, plainly evident in Joseph Smith's King Follett Discourse.19 The main point of the Discourse is that God was once a man who received godhood through "exaltation"-a process that is open to every righteous member of the LDS church.

To defend his position Blake refers mostly to the sermon Joseph Smith gave in June of 1844, two months after the King Follett Discourse, and which is sometimes referred to as The Sermon in the Grove.
As I mentioned in the last post, I think the proper approach is to take a plain and intuitive reading the KFD and Sermon in the Grove (which we will discuss in the next post) and use that as the lens through which we read all previous revelations about God and all reality.

FAIR Topical Guide: King Follett Discourse
Stan Larson, "The King Follett Discourse: A Newly Amalgamated Text," BYU Studies (1978) The King Follett Discourse of April 7, 1844, perhaps the most significant sermon delivered by the Prophet Joseph Smith, was preserved in manuscript form by Thomas Bullock, William Clayton, Willard Richards, and Wilford Woodruff.
Since the Grimshaw amalgamation was made over eleven years after the discourse was given, there may be some concern about the questionable process of expanding or “fleshing out” the text, as well as the propriety of eliminating material from the original manuscript accounts.
From a historical point of view, it is preferable to use primary sources and not reminiscences of over a decade later.

 Mormonism's God(s) (This Rock: July 1992)
Joseph Smith, Jr., who founded Mormonism in 1830, claimed God chose him to be the prophet of the new dispensation, charging him with restoring the true gospel, which had been lost in a complete apostasy ofthe Church in the second or third century.
Smith continued in his Discourse: "My Father worked out his salvation with fear and trembling, and I must do the same; and when I get my kingdom, I shall present it to my Father, so that he may obtain kingdom upon kingdom, and it will exalt him in glory.
Smith's Discourse, a rambling sermon preached at the funeral of King Follett in April, 1844 - two months before he himself perished at the hands of anti-Mormons in Carthage, Illinois - is perhaps the most striking example of the evolution of Mormon theology.

In his King Follett Discourse, Joseph Smith—the first Mormon—laid out a radically new (and by the standards of traditional monotheism, completely blasphemous) vision of Deity.
At the beginning of his famous King Follett Discourse (which serves as the basis for much of Reform Mormon thought), Joseph stood up for the individual’s right to freedom of religion and conscience, and decried all violence in the name of God.
This sermon became known as “The King Follett Discourse,” and in it Joseph taught ideas that not only contradicted the beliefs of most people, but also undermined many of his own earlier notions.
